If so, both Lupul and Briere returning means we need to get creative with the cap, and fast. Am I wrong?
The way I interpreted the remarks was that Briere could return as early as this weekend but more than likely next week was a more realistic date.

Loose pucks
Lasse Kukkonen cleared waivers. Holmgren said he will remain on the Flyers’ roster. … Joffrey Lupul (abdominal pull) practiced and is back on Carter’s line with Scott Hartnell. Lupul will play Saturday against Toronto after missing three games.

It's Panaccio but he can't mess something up like that. Good to see Lupul will be back. Offense is slowly getting back to what it was. I see it looking like:

Gagne-Richards-Knuble
Hartnell-Carter-Lupul
Upshall-Metropolit-Nodl
Cote-Powe-Asham

Edit: Beat me to it by 2 minutes MSE.

So, Kukkonen's cap hit is still in play if they're not sending him down. There better be a trade brewin'.

Why keep waiving Kukkonen and not bothering to send him down?

I wondered the same thing. I wonder if they're planning to package him up and send him somewhere since nobody took him.

They still have time to send him down if they want. I assume that Briere's not quite ready to come back and they see no reason to ship Lasse off until Briere is back.

So when Briere comes back what is his cap hit? 6.5M or 6.5M minus whatever time he missed?
thanks

According to a Jan. 9 column...

Quote:

Kukkonen on waivers, Sbisa to juniors?

In a move that will trim $875,000 off the salary cap, the Flyers placed defenseman Lasse Kukkonen on waivers Tuesday, but will need to trim another $1.125 million to make room for Danny Briere when he returns from a groin tear next week.

Briere carries a cap hit of $6.5 million and Holmgren said he'll need to clear about $2 million to make room for Briere. In addition to waiving Kukkonen, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said he is considering sending 18-year-old rookie Luca Sbisa, who also makes $875,000, back to his junior team in Lethbridge, Alberta.

"We would have to consider that one of the options," Holmgren said. "We've played 40 games and he's played 37 of them. That's pretty good. We've kept him in the lineup, albeit at forward lately, and his ice time was good and I think he's played well. The fact of the matter is, in order to get one of our players back in the lineup we have to do something. That's one of the things we're considering."

Flyers forward Josh Gratton underwent stomach muscle surgery yesterday and will be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks, according to club general manager Paul Holmgren.

Flyers defenseman Ossi Vaananen will miss tonight's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs with a lower body injury. Vaananen, who is being listed as day-to-day, will be replaced in the lineup by Luca Sbisa.

Get one back... lose two.

I'm not liking this pattern.

Three players are expected to return from the injury list for the Flyers when they host Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.

Defenseman Ossi Vaananen (lower-body injury), goaltender Antero Niittymaki (groin strain) and rookie winger Claude Giroux (concussion) are scheduled to practice today and should be ready for game duty.

That's welcome news for a team which has been banged up since the recent six-game road trip across the continent.

Starting goaltender Martin Biron has been pressed into steady work since Niittymaki was sidelined after the Jan. 3 game at Los Angeles. The Flyers don't appear to be ready to give Scott Munroe, called up from the Phantoms, an NHL start.

Giroux has been out of action since taking an elbow to the head from Anaheim's Corey Perry on Jan. 2.

The Flyers recently lost winger Josh Gratton to abdominal surgery. Daniel Briere remains inactive due to a groin strain, and rookie Jonathon Kalinski is scheduled to be released from a South Jersey hospital today after having blood drained from a deep contusion in his left leg.

"We're getting better," general manager Paul Holmgren said on Sunday.

Holmgren said Vaananen's return won't impact the status of rookie defenseman Luca Sbisa. There's been speculation Sbisa might be returned to junior because the team is carrying eight defenseman and has a strong prospect in Ryan Parent, who is playing for the Phantoms as he recovers from shoulder surgery.

"Parent has played well," Holmgren said, "but we have eight defensemen, so there's no rush."

will Claude stay up or do you think he is going back? I would love to see him with Briere but that line would need some serious protection. I kow it isn't possible but a player like Chris Neil with Briere and Giroux would make a very dangerous line, imagine

Knuble Richards Gagne
Hartnell Carter Lupul
Neil Briere Giroux
Upshall Metro Asham

yikes

Yep.

I think Claude stays up. We have that extra spot in the top 9 for a player like him when healthy...unless Briere moves to wing.

I do not care where Giroux will play as long as it's not on 4th line and at least 12-15min per game.

I'd prefer to keep Briere at center. Would love to shop Knuble/Lupul (preferably Knuble) and getting Cole or Cole type of player.

From his days in Carolina:
Plays LW/RW. A power forward who actually has speed and SOB to play against, scores big goals, throws big hits (does not hug like Knuble, hits to hurt), effective on PP/PK, drops gloves to protect his teammates (Hartnell like fights, nothing to write home about but hey it’s ok), excellent on forecheck, good slap/wrist shots, good around the net, drives the net hard, he is ok on PS better then Hartnell.

Not sure how much he makes but he is UFA next year and if Edmonton not making playoffs they will shop Cole.

Hartnell, Richards, Upshall, Asham, Cole, Cote. If Stevens motivates Lupul to throw his weight around even better. I see Cole as a perfect Knuble/Lupul replacement in the future, for the right money of course.

How many games would Giroux need to play for this to be considered his rookie season? I'm just wondering, if he stays up for the rest of the year, would he be eligible for the Calder next year?

Today is Claude Giroux's birthday.

Injury update from after today's practice:

http://flyers.nhl.com/team/app/?serv...LPage&id=18891
Quote:

Injury update - Defenseman Ossi Vaananen, who missed Saturday's game with a lower body injury, skated today and should be ready to play on Tuesday, he said. Claude Giroux, out with a mild concussion sustained on January 2 in Anaheim, also skated and is questionable. Antero Niittymaki, who has missed the last three games with a groin strain, will return and serve as Biron's backup on Tuesday.

Danny Briere is still not ready, but could be back by the end of the week, he said.
