Game-by-Game forward lines

Here's a fun holiday vacation project: went through the Coyotes game logs for the season to attempt to record Gretzky's line combination. Enjoy.

Notes
game 13: Gretz swapped Doan and Carcillo most of the game after Doan started.
game 14: Gretz swaps Doan after starting
game 16: Gretz swaps Doan after starting
game 18: Gretz swaps Doan after starting
game 19: I can barely make sense what Gretz is doing here. Jokinen/Doan/Fedoruk started the game then were split. Gretz is doing a lot of double-shifting of Jokinen and Doan. These seem to be the lines that were together the most.
game 20: More of the same. Jokinen/Doan/Fedoruk start again and are split up.
game 21: 3rd/4th lines didn't stay intact, lots of penalties, swaps.
game 22: Doan/Carcillo/Fedoruk start and are split
game 24: Hanzal/Doan/Boedker start then Doan is moved for Winnik
game 26: Doan/Carcillo/Fedoruk start and are split
game 27: Hanzal/Doan/Boedker start and are split
game 33: Lines this game got really jumbled, Jokinen moved all over the place
game 34: Jokinen/Doan/Carcillo start then Doan is moved for Tikhonov
game 35: Lines get very jumbled, lots of early penalties
game 40: Lines in this game are shifted constantly, lisin/jokinen/boedker start and split. Gretz is running 3 1/2 lines and double-shifting Jokinen, Doan, Mueller on different lines. Carcillo & Tik < 10:00 TOI, Fedoruk & Boedker < 12:00 TOI. Lines as listed are my best guess who played together the most.
game 41: Lines mostly switched about 30 minutes into game.
game 44: carcillo/doan/fedoruk start and split
game 50: another nightmare game to figure out. Rhino injured on 2nd shift, Fedoruk 7min TOI, team largely went with 3 lines swapping all the time, 11 penalties mixed lines up also. Hardly any line stayed the same two consecutive shifts. http://www.timeonice.com/default.htm...0724&submit=Go
game 53: Hanzal/Winnik mostly paired, Doan started, moved. Lines very jumbled, Gretz double-shifted Doan and Hanzal early. Doesn't appear to be a stable 4th line deployed.
game 63: Gretz doesn't run a regular 4th line with Winnik scratched. Lots of doubleshifting players into the 4th line with Lisin/Fedoruk
game 82: Doan starts the final game of the season then switches lines. Lot of line switching this game also

Comments:
- Gretz did a lot of in-game shuffling, I've tried to capture the lines here as they were primarily composed at least for the first half of the game. Where the lines were jumbled early due to penalties I've tried to piece them together based on the majority of playing time during the game.
- Doan has been on the opening line and immediately moved in a lot of games.
- Order of lines 1st/2nd/3rd/4th is based on the order they were put on the ice, not the amount of playing time they received. In a few cases I've left lines in the same slot to make it easier to see that the line remained intact game to game.

Wow. How long did that take you? Did you key on any patterns by sifting through all of that data?

I also noticed lately that Gretzky would start some games with a line that would never see the ice. After the first shift, he would revert to the lines that had been previously reported for the game.

About two hours, including the time to format it up in Excel. Having a hard time finding any real "patterns".

IMHO that seems to be mostly to start Doan each game. Lots and lots of instances where Doan starts, then doesn't play with that line again. Usually Doan will then come out with the 3rd line to roll for the rest of the game.

I kind of figured, but wanted to ask anyway. Thanks for putting the effort into it.

Again, great work...but could you add the score of the game (or just W-L) to this? Thanx for the hard work.

One thing to keep in mind - many (most?) teams tend towards pairs now rather than complete lines.

I was reading McCown's Law over Christmas and he pointed this out (I've read it other places too). He explained the trend towards pairs due to the improved coaching/scouting etc that makes it too easy to shut down down teams when they don't change things up.

Very nice work.

Interesting to see Peter the Great starting on the 1st line more than Shane Doan

Awesome job. Can I have the file?

Honestly I don't even really care if Gretzky want's to shift the lower 3 lines a lot but I want to see a whole month or more of one top line. It's important.

Sure, just PM me an email address to send it to.

I'm thinking the biggest thing is that Olli and Doan really haven't meshed well together--at least early in the season when they played 10 of the first 12 together--which has to have made it hard to settle on a number one line. Gretz seems to be still searching for players that mesh with Olli. Will we see more of the lineup tonight of Lisin/Jokinen/Boedker? Tune in Friday.

Running with Ducky's point on the pairs theory, the Yotes pairs would seem to be:

Reinprecht-Doan (when TGO isn't trying out Jokinen/Doan together again)
Jokinen-Mueller (unless he's again trying out Jokinen partners and shifts Mueller with Rhino & Doan)
Hanzal-Fedoruk/Tikhonov/Boedker/Winnik (TGO seems to comfortable pairing Hanzal regularly with any of these guys)

Man nice work!!

I always felt like Hanzal was kind of the Mike Johnson of this years team. I don't know if he's glue but he seems to be the guy Gretz will put anyone with at anytime. I'm guessing that's because he can handle himself offensively, defensively and physically regardless of linemates.

Updated through game 46 (@Calgary).

Game 40 @Anaheim was a nightmare trying to figure out, Gretz hardly seemed to keep the same three players together for two consecutive shifts. Maybe he knew the game wasn't televised?

By the way, if anyone wants to try to make sense of the lines during the Anaheim game, here's the play by play report with players on the ice:

Or you could use this:

You can drag the bars around for each player, making it easier to sync up lines.

Noticed that TGO has been shuffling lines in-game much less the past dozen or so games.

Has even had Jokinen with the same linemates for 4 games now, which might be the longest of the season.

Great work man, I wish I had that kind of time.

All summer were sitting here hypothesizing on "lines" and grated we knew the Magic of TGO to know everything changes, but all summer we unanimously thought the Mueller, Doan, Jokinin line was a legit threat as a top set. yet he keeps them together for a mere 3 games.

Yeah, I still can't quite figure that one out. Seems like TGO got a really itchy trigger finger on that. Looking through the lines for Mueller/Jokinen/Doan:

- games 1-3 (record 2-1)
- games 10-12 (2-1)
- game 31 (0-0-1)
- games 35-37 (1-1-1)
- game 40 (0-1)
- games 57-58 (0-2)

Mueller, Olli and Doan totaled 5 Goals and 3 Assists in those first 3 games, although some of those points were on the PP with different alignments.

Looking back at the original split after game 3 it looks more like TGO may have broken the line up to try and jumpstart Turris.

After Trade Deadline roster

So, what do you think will be the line combos, defensemen pairing, goaltender duo & scratches coming into the game @ Boston?

Dawes Lombardi Doan
Prucha Mueller Upshaw
Winnik Turris Boedker
Fedoruk Hanzal Reinprecht

Michalek Sauer
Jovo Kallinin
Yandle Klee

Dawes is a natural Lw which is why I put him where he is ,plus he has speed and skill.

When Prust comes back,I think Gretzky will take the fridge out of the lineup and insert Prust.

For the curious, lines the two games since the trade deadline have been very solid. TGO is also giving relatively similar time to the 2nd through 4th lines:

Prucha-Lombardi-Doan
Tikhonov-Hanzal-Boedker
Mueller-Reinprecht-Dawes
Lindstrom-Turris-Upshall

Jovo-Kalinin
Michalek-Sauer*
Klee-Yandle*

* In the Buffalo game, TGO switched pairing to Michalek-Yandle and Sauer-Klee the final 30 minutes.
