Band of Brothers

I just watched all of the episodes and was blown away at how good it was..definitely my favorite war movie/show/whatever. I was a little worried at first when the guy from friends appeared on the screen..but was relieved he only had a minor role. He actually wasn't that bad..but it just reminded of "friends" every time he appeared.

So glad I got the dvd's for Christmas

I'm thinking of buying "Rome" now..but it's pretty damn expensive..is it worth it?

(I don't have HBO, so I missed out on most of the shows)

David Schwimmer's appearance isn't nearly as off-putting as the Jimmy Fallon one.

But yeah, absolutely phenomenal stuff. That first battle scene when they take the artillery guns in the field is just breathtaking. It's horrifying, intense, suspenseful, sad...just incredible.

I think the best episodes are the ones set in The Battle of the Bulge. You hear about how war is hell, but I don't think even Saving Private Ryan captured that feeling as well as those episodes.

I am not a David Schwimmer fan but he fit Herbert Sobel so well that having him in the series made sense.

Definitely one of the best mini series I've seen.

I get goosebumps just from watching the theme.

Rome season 1 is great. Season 2 is also good, but not as good as the first. With 22 episodes its not really a miniseries which might make the price seem more agreeable to you.

The best mini-series/movie/whatever I've ever seen. It's simply amazing.

To the OP. Get HBO. The same guys (Spielberg, Hanks, McKenna, etc.) behind BOB are making "The Pacific".

Not that I know of, but some other posters here, such as Bluenote (who works in the industry) may be of more help with some of the inside info. From the sounds of it, it should be amazing. It's supposed to start airing in 2009, with an estimated budget of $250 Million, where as BOB's budget was half that.

Wikipedia always sums things up well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pacific_(miniseries)

BoB is the best thing ever put to film. I think I've watched it all the way through four or five times, and I wish it was twice as long.

I don't know which episode is best, but "Why We Fight" is pretty powerful.

That's one of the things that makes it so great to me. For the life of me, I couldn't name a favorite episode. Each one works in symphony with the rest, and not watching them all, or removing an episode, will taint the whole experience.

VCX, you should definitely watch the whole thing. If you're not gripped after that, than maybe you're a terminator?

I'd have a hard time deciding between BoB and The Wire. Both are ridiculously good.

By far the best thing I've ever seen on TV. I was expecting a poor man's Saving Private Ryan going in but it surpassed SPR in every respect.

Band of Brothers is spectacular, all the episodes are amazing, but the one that effects me the most is Why We Fight. That's just such a powerful episode.

Rome is great, too, I just started on the second season.

Well one is a cable show with more than a season and the other is a series that usually lasts about a season or under 12 episodes. I'd knock out the Band of Brothers first.

I am going to give it a try again. I keep hearing good things about this series so I might as well give it more than a 2 episode try.

The Wire is a great show though, it's not quick paced so you better sit tight and let the character development unfold.

Just came across a recent Youtube vid, apparently Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, etc) has a cameo as well, complete with a nifty accent, lol.

I remember when i first watched it i had such high hopes for the mini-series and then "Ross" shows up as there pain in the ass basic training commander i thought the series would be ruin. But in the end he did a great job. Even in a later episode with Tom Hanks son is thrown in, he does a good job. I still watch Band of Brothers when ever the History Channel runs a marathon.

But you are right, Jimmy Fallon's scene(luckily he only got one) is the only cringe worthy segment of all of Band of Brothers.

I think David Schwimmer was perfectly cast. He played the role well, and with the casting, the audience hated him much like the paratroopers did as well.

Fallon, eh, he was only in it for seconds so oh well. I'd like him to disappear as you all would as well.

David Schwimmer did a great job in this series. He's also solid in "Uprising", which I highly recommend.

Great show, was glued to HBO every Sunday when they were released and watched the episodes who knows how many times since 2001. I really am fond of the conflict-type mini-series from HBO. And yes, "Why we fight" was a very moving episode but then again, a lot of them were.

Band of Brothers
Generation Kill
House of Saddam

All really great series.
