No way we're going to see a Lindros-like return on any trade ever again, even if by some miracle Crosby and/or Ovechkin were traded. What Philly gave up to Quebec pretty much ensured a Stanley Cup for the Avalanche in 1996 (Philly also sent the pick that became Thibault to Quebec, who traded him to Montreal for Roy, so even more return for Lindros in the end).

That's what I suspected. The problem is that this "top 5 pick" is a potential game-changer, so I would expect that in any return such a player or prospect should be included. Montreal owns only a couple of those, namely Price, Markov, Pacioretty, McDonagh, Andrei Kostitsyn and possibly Sergei, all players coveted by management enough that I very much doubt we see them moved for a potential talent. It just isn't... "Gainey."

for top 2, you're talking lindros.

for 3-5, i'd imagine montreal 1st, mcdonough (because the team would want an NHL ready top prospect), and probably a roster player (probably one of georges, halak, higgins, pleks).

this thread makes 0 sense. habs are one of the youngest teams in the NHL, coming into their own. they don't need a top 5 pick if it means breaking up a young nucleus. and anyone who thinks Price is an equal return for a top 5 pick is out of their MIND. i guarantee you, if gainey put Price on the market he would get a 'lindros like return' as some of you call it. further, the kost brothers and higgins are not marginal top 6 talents.

Since the Wild have only picked top 5 twice it would need to be a special package and I doubt any team would do it if they are picking 1st or 2nd overall. That being said if the Wild were picking 3-5 they may be willing to deal the pick for this package?

McDonagh
Pacioretty
Higgins

Good thing you weren't the GM of the Pens in 2005! You might have dealt the 1st overall for 2-3rd's and a 6th

Do you realize the 1st overall will be a dominant player in the mold a franchise changer? Chris Higgins is a very nice player but on a Cup champion he is on the 2nd or 3rd line.

not even close

Tavares has been hyped as much as Crosby was

just accept the fact that you wont be getting a top 5 pick, unless it's your own

It all depends on who will have the first overall pick, but I'm thinking that on a team like Tampa Bay, it would take something like this:
  • Andrei Kostitsyn
  • Sergei Kostitsyn
  • Ryan O'Byrne or Josh Gorges
  • A top defense prospect like Carle, Weber or McDonaugh
  • Montreal's first round pick

That's 3 NHL established players, young and skilled, a top prospect on defense (which they desperately need) and our first rounder. This should give us the first pick.

They have a lot of forwards, Tampa needs top pairing dmen, so as I have stated before unless Komisarek (signed to an extension) is coming back to Tampa then I doubt their pick gets traded to Montreal. As they have lots of dmen prospects some with top pairing potential (Wishart and Mihalik), but only Ranger and Meszaros are legit 2/3 dmen now so they need another top pairing dman to take some of the load off of those two.

If they got the Kostitsyns then where would they go in the lineup? It isnt as if there are any gaping holes in the team. I mean the top 6 is locked up for a few more years yet, Lecavalier, St.Louis, Prospal, Malone, Halpern, Stamkos. With R2 Szczechura and Jokinen as capable third liners and plenty of players/prospects who can fit in on the fourth line.

So unless Tampa gets back a top pairing dman they wont send the pick anywhere.
