First of all, I don't think that is better than what the Thrashers got for Hossa from a pure talent perspective.
Secondly, Hossa was a UFA at the end of the year and said he was going to test free agency.....while Kovalchuk is signed for another year.
But if the feeling is that Kovalchuk won't be re-signing wouldn't in be in the best interest of the Thrashers to trade him this season or at least before next season starts? His stock won't be as high next season when he's nearing Free Agency.
Surely they must have held some sort of preliminary discussions as to the future of Kovalchuk and what he wants to do. At least I would if I had a player of that caliber on my team and he was only a year away from Free Agency.
