Flames @ Blackhawks - 5:00pm MT - SNET-W & the Fan 960
The Blackhawks won't have recently-named All-Star starter Patrick Kane on the ice as they try to avoid a third straight loss while looking to cool the surging Calgary Flames today at the United Center.
Well not the worst period from the Flames that I've ever seen, but certainly miles away from the best. There were moments of great play surrounded by mediocre effort and lazy plays. The first fifteen minutes were completely dominated by the Hawks. They brought the game to the Flames and really pressed every advantage. If not for the stellar, and even stellar is too soft a word for it, play of Miikka the score would be gut wrenching. Finally the Flames stepped it up with five minutes left in the period and really began to play with some fire. The fourth line was really the only line to show up for every shift and create anything.
The power play had their chances, but as per usual could not capitalize. Truth be told this was only partially the special unit's fault as Habby was his Wall like self. He absolutely robbed Iggy on a breakaway. The special unit did most of everything acceptably, but not overly well. They passed, they shot, but they didn't realy look dangerous with the exception of Iginla's chance. The penalty kill continues to be amazing. Poke checks, decent clearing and a brilliant set of plays by both Miikka and Nystrom kept the Hawks 0 for 1 on the period.
Iginla is trying so hard to get it going. He's been his usual hard working game breaking self. He just needs to continue this and you know he'll get rewarded for it. I also cannot sing the praises of Nystom on the pk highly enough. He does everything right on the disadvantage, and is consistent about it too. I also have to give Giordano some kind words as he's been playing much better this game so far. That diving poke check in particular was inspired. And the hits keep coming! Regher, Pardy and most noteably Roy with the bone crushers. I did laugh when Roy simply shrugged Burish off like a pesky mosquito at the end of the first.
