Renney-Rangers need to get bigger and grittier for a playoff run

Tom Renney with Steve Serby-NY Post

Quote:
Q: Do (the Rangers) need to get bigger and grittier for a playoff run?

A: For a playoff run, I think possibly yes

Renney is right but how do the Rangers get bigger and grittier? They team is built around smallish players. They resemble the Herb Brooks Smurf teams from the early 1980's.

I don't think that translates to the Rangers getting bigger and grittier. The thread title is misleading.

Rissmiller and Voros was the Sathers summer Grit experiment, we'll end up with Shanny and his gritty slash

Sather and Renney dug their own grave in the off season with their constant talking of and commitment to a puck attack with small, shifty and pretty non-physical forwards (which we have way too many of) and "puck-moving" non-physical D-men such as Redden, Roszy and Kalinin...It worked good in Europet but, as expected, that was about it..Not sure it can be reversed this year, but I would still like a phyiscal relaibe D-man and strong forward with both some skill and jam...

Renney is 100% right.Dawes and Prucha are great but not together when you have capt. cantscore and Gomez and your first and second centers. The team is the smurfs all over again. I hate this because we have talent but are continually knocked off the puck and knocked down in front. we need a Clarkson or Neil type guy up front and Excelby on defense. Freddy the shoe is another guy that is all pk and nothing else. Man we could use a Byers type player right now.

4 guys in order, who even if not big, play big and whats scarier, they're only going to play bigger and better as time goes on.

Callahan
Dubinksky
Korpokoski (I don't think many realize the strength he has)
Byers (with Hartford but out with a torn ACL.I was hoping for him to make the team next year but with this set back. We'll see.)

Voros is another guy even if he has less skill then the kids above.

We have size right here or in Hartford. And we have toughness as well to go with it.

Bonus points if you can guess what I'm alluding to.

NEWS FLASH....

Rangers need a PP that scores and doesn't give up goals
Rangers need to start playing 60 minutes every game

Good Job at diverting the attention away Tom!

The New NHL is built for younger faster players. Size is always important but bigger and grittier isn't the answer. Is the game plan to start a fight with each team's top players, rip their Jersey off to show it wasn't tied down (not like they expect to be fighting, ever). Then hope that enough of them get game misconducts so you can beat a team with a shortened bench and no offensive players? Shall the Rangers become the Flyers of the 70s?

Renney needs to stop taking coaching inspiration from Paul Newman.

Not sure where this is coming from.
But one of my all time favorite players is a small guy. Joe Sakic.
The Rangers could have drafted him the year after they drafted Brian Leetch but I guess they thought like a few other teams. He was too small. Now if the Rangers would have drafted Sakic, I can't believe Keenen probably would have convinced Smith to trade him for Noonen.

"Playoffs? Playoffs??? Are you kiddin me? I just hope we can win a game."

I'm trying to find a team that could keep the Rangers out of that 8th seed. IDK. Atl, Isles, tampa, Fla, Car, Buf, Ott, Tor, Pit.

Who there can do it?
and actually I listed 9.
I already got the Rangers playing either Washington or Boston in the first round. We better hurry and get this years version of Avery or else we will not lose in the second round!!

few mind boggling things..

Q: You're not superstitious?

A: If I've got a tie that I lose in, I'll wear that tie again right away.
(kinda like he does with players?) this 1 got me puzzled..

Q: What would you hope Rangers fans say about you?

A: He cared.

cared? is something brewing? unless it was asked like in the future , when hes done .
why not he cares ? hmm
