I don't get it. The guy was a hall of fame player. He spent some of his career with us. How does that make him qualified to be a head coach or GM any time soon? I don't see Giants fans wishing Lawrence Taylor would come be our defensive coordinator next year. Just because the guy was a great player doesn't mean he has any idea how to coach.

If Messier really wanted to come back he would be coaching at a lower level right now. He'd be coaching in juniors. He would have tried to be an assistant in the AHL for a bit. Until he does that I don't understand why he gets any consideration for coach, and especially for GM.

Comparing LT and the Giants to Messier and the Rangers is a big-time stretch.

Your point about starting low in coaching is valid, but a guy like Messier that had been a captain in the NHL for some time would likely start out as an assistant coach on an NHL bench.

Yeah, Leetch's personality is totally suited for behind-the-bench work.

i would love to see messier as the assistant GM so he can start to learn and so when sather leaves he can be next in line for the position. As for the coach, I think renney will be gone by the end of the season and I wouldnt be surprised if a coach like Laviolette or Quinn were brought in as the head coach.

Messier wouldn't be bad as an assistant, but what coach would want that kind of personality under him? It'd be a worry for some coach to have that kind of strong personality under you, that he may undermine your power.

Messier being an assistant coach would be pretty awesome. Out of respect for him I feel the players would push themselves instead of slack off. The man just emulates that kind of environment I feel.

A few weeks back I made a comment that I thought it was a foregone conclusion that Mess would be the next GM of this team, and a lot of people jumped on me for saying that. I feel the same way right now, and things like this only reinforce my belief.

I've talked to a few NHLers here and there in my time and the impression I always got, because this is always a subject that I was curious about, is that a lot of players, especially guys who were a little bit younger than Messier but played with or against him for a while, really don't think very much of him. Certainly, they respect his accomplishments on the ice, but I've gotten more than a few hints that people think he is arrogant, out for himself and not very likeable. Maybe those who played with him for a while know him better, I don't know, but it's just what I've heard from a few guys.

On a side note, I've also heard much of the same about Mario, but that's another story.

So, now you need to act as if you drank 5 red bulls to have good hockey knowledge.

I expect better from you.

That's not what I meant. I don't doubt Leetch knows as much as there is to know about how to play the power play as anyone else that's ever played, but his personality doesn't strike me as that of a coach. Some people are good at certain things, but that doesn't mean they're good at teaching, instructing others how to do it.

And Leetch is a quiet guy. I just don't see him as a coach.

But I'm not trying to put his ability in doubt. I love Leetchie.

I know what your saying, but I meant it as Power play coach. Have you ever seen Pearn yell at anyone? The guy just stands and stares at Renney. I think even if Leetch never talked he would do a better job.

He really should be an assistant coach or assistant GM for a few years before he steps right in.

That same guy who cries would think nothing of taking out a whole row of your teeth just for the hell of it.

That said I wouldn't want him coaching the Rangers at this point. Assistant coach may better suit him to start.

what would worry me is what would happen if messier didn't turn out to be a good head coach or gm? does that ruin his reputation in ny?

Doubtful. He'll pretty much always be The Captain, unless he for some reason intentionally tried to burn bridges.
