2009 UFA: ridiculous amount of forwards available, almost no d-men

I found this a bit strange. For the 2009 UFA off-season, look how the forwards stack up to the defensemen.

Forwards: Gaborik, Hossa, Havlat, Sakic, Tanguay, Koivu, Guerin, Kovalev, Tkachuk, Lehtinen, Cole, Comrie, Fedorov, Gionta, Lang, Cammalleri, Sedin's, Afinogenov, Satan, McDonald, Madden, Zetterberg, Knuble, Morrison, Kotalik, Kozlov, Sykora, Sillinger, Fedotenko, Williams, Antropov, Weight, Reinprecht, Axelsson, Grier, Franzen, Pahlsson, and quite a few more.

v.

Defensemen: Niedermayer, Schneider, Zubov, Blake, Bouwmeester, Aucoin, Morris, Ohlund, Spacek, Kuba, Havelid, Mara, Komisarek, and then some players no one really wants. The distinction is heightened by the fact that several players at the top of this class could retire.

Obviously not all of these players will be UFA come July 1st, 2009, however there is a tremendous contrast between the forwards and defensemen available. Teams that are stocked on defense will make out very well in unrestricted free agency (assuming they pursue forwards), and on the trade market (assuming they dangle a defenseman).

Excellent post. Additionally, the salary cap is predicted to be flat so a number of formerly free-spending teams (i.e Rangers, etc) will probably not be in a position to go after major free agents.

Looking at the defensemen. At least 2-3 may retire also. Further decreasing the defenseme available.

Those forwards might not be so happy in July. With the rumored 2010 cap reduction fears it might just squeeze a few down in asking price.

09 Forwards >> 08 Forwards
08 D-men > 09 D-men
09 Goalies > 08 Goalies

Better goalies and much better forwards this year, but not as many good defensemen this year. Still, it should be a lot more exciting than last year's.

Great teams have been built outwards from the goaltending and defense. Once you get past the truly great forwards - Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, Gretzky, Lemieux, Sakic, Yzerman, etc forwards tend to be interchangeable parts.

On the list, outside of an aging Sakic none of the forwards have a history of making a difference to their team. They may be pleasing to watch but ..................

I predict that Schneider and Niedermayer will retire after this season.

But yea there is some quality forwards out there and it will be very interesting off-season.

Makes me glad that the Flyers don't really need Defense. and if they did it would have to be by trade.

Jbo is going to get like 8 million by rarity alone

the chances of Zetterburg getting to FA unfortunately are very very slim.

If all of those forwards make it to the summer unsigned (which of course they won't) this will be an interesting July! I'll be most excited to see what happens in:

Detroit - Hossa, Zetterberg, and Franzen all need resigned, I'm guessing they'll keep 2of the 3 with Franzen being the odd man out.

Vancouver - Do the Sedin's stick around or do they move on to another team? Or do the Canucks go for the Hossa-Gaborik duo?

Injuries - How much do lingering injury problems affect the amount teams are willing to pay Gaborik and Havlat?

Sundin should be on the list and you might as well remove Sakic regardless of his contract status he is far from available

I hope the Isles can get him after we draft Hedman or Tavares. If the Isles get either Komi/JayBO and Hedman/Tavares, things will be a lot better on the Isle of Islanders.

I think it will come down to his loyalty with the Wings.

Detroit has been great to Henrik, and I think he's one player who's not going anywhere.

I see Mike Cammalleri coming to the Leafs. I think the Leafs need a legit scoring option, and Cammy loves Toronto as he's a good Richmond Hill boy.

he doesn't fit Burke's team for the future however.

Ottawa still has 3 million in cap space thats unused and they don't need to resign any very important players on the team. Gerber's contract has been eating up cap space 3.7 million to play as a backup and he's expected to be replaced by a great goaltending prospect in Brian Elliot.

Depends on who they want to keep in the bottom 6, but they have plenty of cap space for a top 6 forward.
