In the Shadow of Knott's Berry Farm

Damn those Mighty Ducks.

If they win tonight, they will pull ahead of the Oilers by 2 points. Oil will have 2 games in hand. They play Pittsburgh, but the Pens are playing better.

Three weeks or so ago, here was how these teams looked:

5. Calgary 56gp, 64pts
6. Dallas 57gp, 64pts
7. Los Angeles 56gp, 63pts
8. St. Louis 55gp, 60pts

9. Nashville 55gp, 60pts
10. Edmonton 56gp, 55pts
11. Minnesota 57gp, 55pts
12. Phoenix 55gp, 53 pts
13. Anaheim 56gp, 51pts

Since then, here are what these teams have accomplished:

Calgary 11gp, 10pts, fallen from 5th to 7th
Dallas 10gp, 15pts, up from 6th to 5th
Los Angeles 10gp, 10 pts, fallen from 7th to 8th
St. Louis 11gp, 9pts, fallen from 8th to 9th
Nashville 12gp, 16pts, up from 9th to 6th
Edmonton 11gp, 12pts, 10th place both times
Minnesota 10gp, 7pts, down from 11th to 12th place
Phoenix 12gp, 7pts, down from 12th to 13th place
Anaheim 12gp, 16pts, up from 13th to 11th

The Oilers have had a fine run during this stretch, effectively eliminationg 2 more clubs (Minnesota, Phoenix) from their rear view mirror. However, two other clubs are now looking home and dry (Dallas, Nashville), and the Oilers appear to be in a 5 team race for the last 2 spots:

7. Calgary 67gp, 74pts
8. Los Angeles 66gp, 73pts
9. St. Louis 66gp, 69pts
10. Edmonton 67gp, 67pts
11. Anaheim 68gp, 67pts

Calgary is sucking wind and they have a tough schedule. The Oilers play LA twice and if they win both its a whole new ballgame. St. Louis looks like a team that is out of gas.

Edmonton looks strong, and with the additions of Markkanen and Nedved got a huge shot in the arm.

But those damn Mighty Ducks keep hanging around like a sore tooth.

I'm not sure why you (or we) should be all that concerned, since I think even you don't particularly believe the Oilers will make the playoffs without looking at Anaheim

They're crediting Giguere for the difference. Hmm, is goaltending of profound importance? May have been some discussion on this recently!

The bad news IMO is that it looks like a goaltender going on a hot streak. It would be slightly more comfortable if it were easily explainable through schedule differences or luck. Not easy.

If they win tonight, I may have to add them to the playoff calculator. For simplicity and because it made more sense to look up in the standings at the time, I didn't put them in there. But as you say, they're charging hard so its turning into a 5 horse race.

Well the OIlers have only won twice in their last six

and they gassed two points and two tiebreaking W's vs Det and in Dal. So they are picking up points but have offically begun to sputter.

Gigure is money again and that's fuelling the Ducks.

In the shadow of Knottsberry Farm? I thought that's where Comrie wanted to be.

Looks like Anaheim gassed one tonight against Pittsburgh! It's going to be a fun ride down the home stretch..if we win the games we have in regulation against calgary(1) and L.A.(2) it will be a huge boost and those are definitely must win games! St. Louis is still in the run, getting a win tonight vs NYI and is 2 back of 8th spot, so they are still a threat...plus if anaheim gets hot watch out!
