just to add more to this post:

according to the spreadsheet, the pagination is due on Jan 28th..the editorial is due Feb 9th..and it's shipping on February 23rd.

Not sure if that's when it's mailed to subscribers or stores. Either way it says it's on sale March 9th.

Subscribers should start receiving it in about 3 weeks. Please post in this thread when you get the issue.

I always get excited about Future Watch and the Draft Preview..even though they're not (and THN as a whole for that matter) even close to being as good as they used to be.

just bumping this thread. Subscribers should have their copies in about 2 weeks or so and it'll hit stores in less than a month.

Anyone want to predict who's on the cover?

Since they've changed to glossy magazine format it has been:

06- Evgeni Malkin
07- Erik Johnson
08- Carey Price

That's a pretty good question. Seems like all the guys that immediately popped in my head are already NHL regulars or 2009 draft eligible and thus aren't supposed to be in the Future Watch issue.

It's someone already drafted right?

I could guess Mason or Doughty.

Generally speaking, the cover guy is reserved for the #1 prospect. And by their standards, if the guy is already an NHL regular when they poll their scouts (right after the WJC) then he's not supposed to be considered. Mason and Doughty were both NHL regulars by then. Would be curious to see which side of the fence Bogosian would land on.

We'll see how it goes, but I'm thinking the top guys with that criteria are probably JVR, the other '08 top 10s, and Jonathan Bernier.

I'm guessing Derek Stepan.

I'm definitely interested to see who it is this year.

In the last few years, the top prospect has been pretty much an easy choice. But this year? Not so much.

I wonder if Filatov counts? He's been back and forth all season hasn't he? If he was in the AHL (much like Price last year) when the issue was being worked on, I can see him being the top prospect.

I like Stepan a lot, but, i'd be surprised if he's on the radar of THN. Jarrko Immonen stayed on THN's list, even though it was obvious he had been passed by Dubinsky, who didn't get a mention.

I'll guess that it's either Filatov or JVR on the cover.

I always enjoy THN Future Watch, I trust them a lot more than I do HockeysFuture or anyother prospect rankings site/magazine

I literally read the last one for about 2-3 days in total time

Here is my guess for Ottawa's top 5

1. D, Erik Karlsson
2. D, Brian Lee (if still eligible)
3. G, Brian Elliott
4. C, Jim O'Brien
5. LW, Ilya Zubov

after thinking about it, I'm sticking with my original prediction of Filatov. JVR might have a shot as well.

Can't think of too many other players who I see as being #1.

You'd have to think Markstrom would be up there. Possibly top 10-15?

I'm probably going to go with Filatov as well. Recent Future Watch issues have put a lot of stock in WJC performances, so it wouldn't surprise me to see Markstrom in the top 10.

I dont think so! DiBenedetto is an overage player in the OHL. If he was that good, he would be in the AHL right now.

And I can assure you that Okposo, Bailey and Comeau don't count.

Here's my guess :

1. Aaron Ness
2. Kirill Petrov
3. Travis Hamonic
4. Rhett Rakhshani
5. Jesse Joenssu
6. Trevor Smith
7. Corey Trivino
8. Robin Figren
9. David Ullstrom
10. Jack Hillen

HM : Jyri Niemi, Blake Kessel, Jason Gregoire, David Toews, Jared Spurgeon, Mark Katic, Matt Martin.

in the poll thread, someone in Columbus stated that it was announced Filatov is the #1 prospect in FW 09.

The Hockey News will release its "Future Watch" edition in early March. The Blue Jackets' "future" -- defined by the magazine as players in the NHL under 21 years old, as well as minor-league and junior prospects -- is ranked among the top five teams in the league.

Nikita Filatov, the Jackets' first-round pick last June, is named the No. 1 prospect in hockey.

The Predators, Wild and Thrashers are ranked in the bottom half of the league

Here is my top 5 for the Leafs, although I doubt many will agree with me:

1) Justin Pogge
2) Dmitri Vorobiev
3) Jimmy Hayes
4) Mikhail Stefanovich
5) Chris DiDomenico

I'd also accept a little Jerome Flaake in the mix.
