KHL to reduce salary by 30% !

According to RDS, the KHL will reduce the salary of their players by 30% because of the economic situation, mostly because of the decrease of gaz price.

Jagr should have signed with the Oilers...

That would be huge and I am one that supports more leagues. Would never happen but it would be cool if Jagr defected to a team for the post season. It is a shame though to hear of this, didn't see how they were capable of paying what they were with their revenues in the first place.

There was speculation Jagr might be looking to return to NYR, but after much debate there came to issue of the KHL players needing to clear waivers in the NHL after a playing so many games in another professional league.

This is a speculation so far. There were talks about rolling back the salaries this week in the KHL but there were no official word that it happened.

Any insight on the legality of a salary rollback? Is that possibility included in the player contracts or would this be a unilateral move by the league?

RDS is hardly a credible source, first off

second, as Sib said, its only speculation

Metallurg Magnitogorsk has cut STAFF expenses by 30%, maybe this is where they skewed that number from?

Well obviously, if it's speculation, it's gonna happen someday. Can't continue paying those big salaries and act like the economy is kicking ass.

I cant believe people still want the league to fail.

What skin is it off any of your backs whether Russia has a succesful hockey league or not?

I hope this doesnt hurt the growth of the KHL. Hopefully its only a slight market correction. And it isnt like the NHL isnt getting hurt, theres speculation left right and centre that the cap is going down and the players are going to lose some of their escrow money.

RDS: KHL salaries to shrink

http://www.rds.ca/hockey/chroniques/265578.html

Babelfish translation
Quote:
The financial crisis now shakes the continental League of Russia. Thus, the leaders of the KHL announced a nearest compression of 30% of the wages of the players. The fall of the price of the barrel of petrol is the leading cause of this cut.
Anyone else hear about this from any other source besides RDS?

Sounds like a fake. Nothing was decided on Wednesday and there will be another meeting on the 20th about the crisis. If the decision was made it surely would have been already in Russian media.

Salaries will be cut most likely.

It's just that the number is taken off the wall.

All I'm reading into the excitement is that people DO see the KHL as a legitimate threat. Would they be as excited if this were the SEL?

It's because of the hype that they created for themselves. The Russians were bragging about how their league would be better then the NHL and would be the top league in the world in a few years and such. It's just that it's always fun to see an arrogant ******* crash and burn.

if you go from making a trillion dollars a year to 800 billion, you still have a lot of money

some of you people make it sound like oil companies are going under because the price-per-barrel has gone down temporarily

its already the top league in europe. thats a decent accomplishment, and thats BEFORE they get more non-russian teams in there

eliminate a slew of smaller russian markets, the talent pool becomes a lot less diluted and the product is that much better / elite
add in Hockey Europe countries and whatnot, and you surely have a great league that is much closer to the NHLs level than the RSL was alone
