The only way this would be a bad deal is if there's a NTC. Then it would be a wait and see game. Could be fine, could be terrible.
The only thing I disagree with here is that this deal with an NTC (which I totally cannot believe is there, so its a mute point) is a 'wait and see'. In that case it would be an atrocity.

But the good part here is that it insures a real return on Staal. People who like me want him traded has to realize that this doesn't change anything other than Staal now being confirmed in the wage bracket most people knew he would be and that he is off the offer sheet category. Nothing else changes.

We don't know if there is one.

All I was saying is, if there is, then the only way this is good is if Staal meets his potential. Then it's fine. If he doesn't then it's a bad deal for sure.

NTCs are always a bad idea.

Jordan Staal on the MM show at 5pm.

MM: Congrats on the deal, I guess it shows that you do like playing here, and plan on staying here?

JS: (laughs, as in, DUH, kinda obvious) Yeah, I like the city, I like the guys, and we want to win here.

MM: "what do the Pen's need to do to get out of this funk"

JS: "I don't know, I think it is matter of guys playing the system, and playing within themselves. And if nothing is there, don't force things. We need each guy to look within themselves and not worry about what others are doing."

Staal also said somewhere in there, "we really don't have anyone to lean on".

That was interlaced into a bunch of pat cliches. I am guessing that speaks to void of veteran leadership, OR lack of coaching staff confidence. I dunno. Just guessing a bit.

MM: I know you are tired of this question, but wing or center? What do you see yourself at long term?

JS: I don't know, I guess it is kinda up in the air right now. I started out the season as center, so I feel comfortable there.

MM: You and Sidney looked like you played well together.

JS: Yeah, playing with Sidney Crosby is never a bad thing. But I would just say, that I was drafted a center, and that is what I would prefer.

MM: What are you going to do with the money?

JS: What am I going to do with the money???.....I don't know, maybe pay them enough money to get you off the air.....

MM: WHAT?? WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO THAT?

JS: Nah, I am just kidding.

I like this kid more and more.

The wing situation is becoming laughable.

I think someone brought this up before, but I believe the NTC, if it's even there, would only cover the years that Staal is a UFA.

Maybe he was slightly irked by the Madden article suggesting that the Pen's trade Staal. (not enough to not do the interview, but enough to throw in a zinger.)

A sign and trade doesn't seem likely but would be nice to get rid of a center making 4 million a year and get a winger making around the same as Staal.

So, that would be his seventh NHL season, or final year of his contract if I am calculating that properly.

That's what I figure too. I'm sure most of the athletes in this city think he is a jackass. Most notably Crosby and Roethlisberger who are shamelessly and unceasingly verbally worshiped/pleasured. He knows who the fans like most, so makes sure he leads those band wagons. I'm sure he likes them too, but you will never, and I mean NEVER hear him say anything contorversal about those two.

And yeah I'm guilty of listening to the show, it's mcuh much better now that they make him play Nirvana (whom I am sure he hates) between segments.

Did anybody else notice that Jordan Staal didn't give the typical, "It's a great city to play hockey in, the fans are great and I'm happy to be here for the next few years." speech? Now that I think about it, I don't recall him ever saying anything great about our city.

I guess that's just his style. But how am I supposed to sleep without knowing that he cares about my city!

I was under the impression that the CBA prevents players from a NTC or NMC during their 1st actual contract.

It can't be. Crosby has one for his last year of the contract at least. It has to take into account years in some measure.

Yeah, you can only have a NTC when you are eligible for UFA (AKA 26 years old or 7 years in the league)
