4/16 only means he is worth more via trade. teams might have paid him 5-6.

It's not about 4 million now, because he is playing out the last year of his rookie deal, but whether the 4 million/year will be worth it in a from next year until 2013-2014.

Having him signed makes it easier to trade him as well, since he now has a set price and no chance of being offer sheeted, thus having to give up multiple picks.
Gotta keep the dream alive I guess...

So much money tied up in the center position... with no legit wingers to speak of...

Who wants to guess the first 3 picks of the Pens draft this year?

No way man, we draft on player value, never for position! I predict:
1st: Center
2nd: Offensive Defensemen
3rd: Center

hahaha

I think we need to move him to wing starting tonight and just leave him there until he becomes a good winger.

Because at that price it's way too much money tied up in centers with next to nothing left for the wingers.

I think ON PAPER the signing looks really nice. You get a young kid w/ all the talent in the world for 4 years & 4M per... but I agree w/ MJ about having so much money tied up in the center position.

It's going to look a lot less likely for any type of trade now until Satan is off the books. We also just guaranteed that Gonch would play his contract out & be w/ a new team.

That would be nice. I'm on board with playing him with Sid during this road trip to see if things work out while Dupuis and Fedotenko are hurt.

Maybe he'll have some more confidence in himself tonight with this new contract in hand

I'll tell you what... You go ahead and put him at Wing then it'll REALLY look like an over payment. Staal is not a winger.

Now that he is getting paid I bet Staal will become lazy and play uninspired hockey...

Oh wait...

I'll say 4 years/16M total
1 extra year?? I don't see how you can say that. Staal gave up no extra year on this deal and can become a UFA before he is 25. He will have 7 years at the end of this deal. If this was a 5 year deal then you could say Shero got an extra year.

I am okay with the deal but wanted that extra year with a 5 year deal. Staal will just be reaching his prime when this deal is done. Even if the price is right the years certainly are not the best.

I will worry about it in 4 1/2 years if he does turn out to be a top line center type player. The good thing about this is now Shero has cost certainty over the next 4+ years with all his key players (Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Fleury, Whitney, and Orpik). If The deal is for $4 million or lower on the cap hit per year then Shero will have some money to spend next season for wingers. With Satan $3.5 million, Sykora $2.65 million, Boucher $2.5 million, Fedotenko $2.5 million, Gill $2.1 million, and hopefully Eaton gets dealt and we get his $2 million off the books which would make $15.25 million less. Add the $5 million raise for Malkin and about $1.5 million raise for Staal and that gives you about $9 million to use on some replacements. Hopefully that money is better spent because of that list only Sykora and Fedotenko would I want back at the right price.

Penguins just got hosed. I hope I get proved wrong but Stall looks like a $1M player to me.

Does noone else feel this could be a sign n trade? I mean if OTT wanted him they would LOVE him for 4/16. So to teams that wanted to make an offer sheet for him, he is probably worth even more now. Thoughts?

But he will be an unrestricted free agent at that time.

Time for him to put up or shut up. Seems to me that we are going to get a big trade coming our way 3 years into that deal to fill out our roster with cheaper players after we lose people like Cooke, Gonchar, Dupuis, etc.

**** - this is awful..

4 million for "potential", not a player who looks lost out there 9 times out of 10 and can't hit the ******* net

Agreed, and those two will cost another $5m to $6m combined for the next season or two. That means we could have less to spend on a winger for Sid next year than we are paying Satan right now

Not that it matters much, but it's 3.5, 3.5, 4.5, 4.5.
