Gonchar- 4.5 Million
Orpik- 3.75
Fleury- 5.25

I'm assuming he got around 16 million for 4 years...

So 4 million for Staal..

That is 35.5 million on 6 players and the cap could be as low as 50-52 million by the time the 2010-2011 season rolls around depending on the economy. That leaves only about 14-16 million to fill the rest of the roster (14 more players).

The Pens don't exactly have a ton of top notch prospects left to fill in for cheap either...will be interesting to see what they end up doing.
Gonchar will be off the books, sadly.

Is Jordan Staal really worth $4M a year?

Gonchar's 5M hit comes off the books after next season, just in time for the speculated cap drop. thanks for your concern though.

Wonder where this puts Kessel. Stall was drafted 3 spots ahead of Kessel. Hmmm....this could be a good measuring stick to gauge what Kessel gets.

Anybody think Kessel will get the same as Stall?

PS....sorry to stear the thread away from Stall for a bit.

Its going to be one of those contracts thats overpaying the player when it begins and underpaying him when it ends. Not a whole lot different than most of the other long term deals for young players that are moe and more common now.

Well I compare Staal to Kesler because they're very similar players, and Kess is only at $1.75M right now.

think the Bruins will be looking to lock up Kessel for longer than 4 years.

Pens are screwed. You can't tie up 22 million for your center position alone... That leaves them 11 million for their defense, 11 million for left wingers, and 11 million for forwards...at best.

They have 15.5 million in their D already with only 5 D.

So really that leaves them 9 million for their left winger and right wingers. So far you have

Depuis, Godard, Cooke, Talbot, and Jeffrey amounting to 4.5 million. So basically, you have 6.5ish million dollars for the rest of your forwards when your lines look like this (not what they really are but the point is the same):

Dupuis Crosby **
Cooke Malkin **
** Staal **
** Talbot Godard

In conclusion, the Pens will have 6.5 million to pay for 5 forwards paying them each roughly 1.3 million dollars. Good luck Pens fans, it's sure to be a great year.

No such person as Stall....as mentioned earlier.

As for comparison between Staal and Kessel.....Kessel has shown a very good scoring touch this year.....could very well get the same/similar contract as Staal maybe a bit less.

So Horton signs a 6 year deal and is trade bait, but Staal signs a 4 year deal and is off the market?

I love how NHL fans are so considerate. I guess Florida's just that left over chicken from the night before that everyone likes to pick at.

but Staal was already on $2.2million with bonuses so he is hardly likely to drop down to $1.75 million. I expect Kesler will want more than Staal when he becomes UFA.

At which time they'll replace him with a new top pairing d-man making league minimum.
