Does Stevens Take the Shootout Seriously?

If he did, maybe we would practice it. Frankly, I don't understand any other reason we are losing shootouts.

I realize to most hockey purists, and even enthusiastic fans, the shootout is a joke. However, we now have NINE OTL losses, with SEVEN of them being in the shootout. This is unacceptable. That is 7 points right now that we could have. ONE more win would make us tops in the division.

There is no way a team with our skill level should be on the constant losing end of these shootouts.

Goalies have been better this year, and we did win a few. The problem is not picking the right shooters. That and the expectations are heavy because everyone in the stadium is thinking what we are. They have to go out there and do crazy stuff, almost act like they dont care. There is no way Pavel Datsyuk does what he does without risking looking like an idiot. As far as the line up, the obvious is Gagne is gone. Richards has to start, Carter (with speed and his reach he should be better, again just a pressure thing i think), and then guys like Upshal, Carle, Sibsa. Guys with moves, NOT Hartnell and Lupul.

From what I have read, the team practices it at the end of every practice. The main problem is that the forwards almost never try anything but one move and goalies usually never stopped a shot. All the none goals usually went wide. That changed recently but the moves are known around the league. Its up to the players to make the changes on the ice and in their minds.

Does Biron take it seriously?

And the shootout vs LA Niitty had hurt himself in OT. We are better this year.

I would actually go with

Richards
Upshall
Carter - He should just give up on moves and pull a wrister off for distance.

Whatever Steven's does he needs to make sure Knuble and Hartnell are in the locker room for the entire shoot out

Watching Hartnell in a shootout or even on a breakaway is enough to drive you nuts. He does that quick deke to the left and a top shelf backhand every time and it rarely works.

I actually heard somewhere that the only team in the league that gives serious practice time to shootouts is the Rangers and (surprise, surprise) they are 8-2 in shootouts this year.

Now I know it may not seem smart to take away from normal practice to prepare for a situation that seems so simple and only occurs once every 5 or 6 games, but with the Flyers sitting at 2-5 in shootouts I think that extra shootout practice time would be helpful. Hell maybe we would have stolen a couple of those losses, been a respectable 4-3, and have a more comfortable seat on top of the division. After all, the points are nice but if it comes down to it wins are the tiebreaker and the Flyers don't have as many of those as other teams with similar point totals.

Hartnell really needs some kind of shootout/breakaway training. You almost always can tell what is going to happen when Hartnell is with the puck and only ice between him and the goaltender.

Hartnell should just shoot the puck into the goalies pads and loose an edge and crash into the net, taking the goalie and puck in for the goal

If Briere was healthy this season Flyers would win more in SO.

P.S I think Nitty is better then Biron in SO.

ive seen them practice it at the skate zone. and from players interviews they also go over film to look at opposing goalie tendencies.

Nitty is better than Biron. Unfortunately you can't just stick Nitty in there for shootouts because he's not warmed up. That might not seem like a big deal but having to go in and stop 3 consecutive breakaways from the other teams best 3 players after sitting on the bench for 3 hours is just impossible. Goalies need the warmup to get a groove going and build a little confidence, you can't just stick them in there.

Hasn't Biron stolen our only two wins in the shootout?

Oh I know, I just don't see how that's relevant. He's been fine this year in the shootout and that's all that matters. In another couple months it doesn't matter at all.
