Will The Leafs Win a Stanley Cup?

Since Burke has grabbed Toronto's reigns, will the Leafs win a Cup in the next decade?

Since we're not done year one of the Burke rebuild, I'm going to go with it's too early to say. However, I think we'll be a very competitive team when all is said and done (rough time frame of 4-6 years).

So you think ten years from now the only good player we'll have from our entire rebuild is Luke Schenn?

I'll wait until the trade deadline/summer to decide, BB's intentions will be clear by then

They should be in a position to draft Hedman by the end of the season (if not Tavares), so I think that with a young core(25 and under) of:

Grabovski
Stempniak
Stajan
Kulemin
Stralman
Schenn
HEDMAN
Pogge
Tlusty
DiDomenico

for the future, I think they could make some serious noise. Matter of fact, I would go as far as to say that after the Canadiens, they have the best shot at winning the cup in the future.

The problem is i don't think they'll get Tavares or Hedman. they won't finish bottom 2, i think it might be a 12-13th finish in the conference, never mind overall. they'll need to get lucky in the lottery.

Are they going to finish dead last and get a prime draft pick or learn to pick out draft gems? If the answer is yes, then they probably will win one soon. If neither happens, then I doubt it.

It's possible.

Anything's possible.

Hell, next year could be the start of the Jackets dynasty for all we know.

No they're never bad enough to get a Lottery Pick and not good enough to make they playoffs. They're stuck in the worst possible place - mediocrity.

That pool (minus Hedman, no way they'll finish that low this season) does not scream "make some serious noise". That pool says - take it easy baby, it's mediocrity time to me.

So it's typical of the Maple Leafs of the last few years?

Unfortunately for the Leafs they will be a fringe playoff team (missing mostly) for the duration of Burke's tenure. They won't ever finish low enough to get top tier prospects like Tavares or Hedman, who will be going to the Islanders and Thrashers respectively.

They have a better chance acquiring top tier free agents to help the club as opposed to the draft. And if Burke doesn't approach players about their NTC, he'll wait until the window opens to deal them in the off-season. Most of those trades won't involve high-level prospects.

The only reason Burke won a Cup in Anaheim was because Chris Pronger, Scott Niedermayer, and Teemu Selanne all fell in his lap. I don't see anything like that happening in Toronto.

Should tank it up and trade Kaberle + to get the number 2 pick and draft Tavares and Hedman 1 & 2. Trade Kubina in the off-season for some other young players. And dump Toskala on someone and try to get some picks in return. Use the extra cash to poach some rfa's and there ya go. But they seriously need to look at their defence and stock themselves with young forwards.
