3/6 GDT: Kings vs. Canadiens

Los Angeles Kings (25-18-16-7) VS. Montreal Canadiens (35-26-6-2)

Game Time: 7:00 PM PST | 10:00 PM EST
Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California
TV Broadcast: (home) Fox Sports Net West | Televised nationally on CBC
Radio Broadcast: KSPN AM 710
Online broadcast: [NHL.COM] | [KVTA AM 1520]

**No Television Pre-Game show tonight. Kings' radio pre-game show will also air at 6:30 PM PST on KSPN 710 with Nick Nickson and Darryl Evans.**

With 16 games left in the regular season for the Los Angeles Kings, they cannot afford to let points slip away. They are far from securing a playoff spot with the St. Louis Blues, Edmonton Oilers and even the surging Anaheim Mighty Ducks within striking distance. They have to beat teams below them in the standings and win games at home if they want any chance at playing hockey after the season ends. To say that coach Andy Murray was not pleased with the team's performance Thursday night against the Minnesota Wild is an understatement. "We got outworked by a team that was playing hockey last year in the month of May when we were sitting on our butts watching other teams play. That's unacceptable. We played like a team that was looking at a team quite a bit below them in the standings. I saw signs of that at practice today. We've got some guys that need an attitude shake-up." (Andy Murray). A shake-up in the lineup might happen as well. With Dustin Brown and Jason Holland close to coming back, the Kings may start making some line-up adjustments. "We've been pretty good after a performance we're not happy with." (Murray).

On a more positive note, Martin Straka played in his first game since coming back from his double knee operation back in January. Straka played with Alexander Frolov and Jozef Stumpel in his first game back. That line created many great scoring opportunities but All-Star goalie, Dwayne Roloson made some spectacular saves, including one on Jozef Stumpel. Stumpel was looking at an empty net, but Roloson got his glove in the right place at the right time to glove down his scoring chance. Both goalies looked great in this contest. Roloson and Cristobal Huet kept the game at a one-one tie, giving both clubs a point in the standings. However, this tie is more like a loss to the Kings since they had a late lead with 2:17 left in the third. Kings were scrambling in their own zone and left Jason Wiemer wide open to receive a pass from Pierre-March Bouchard in front of Huet to score and tie the game up at one a piece. "Pierre made a good pass. He showed good patience and slipped it between the guy's skates. They had been out there for a while and I think their penalty killers were tired." (Jason Wiemer). Veteran left winger, Luc Robitaille scored the first goal of the game to give the Kings the 1-0 lead. It looked like Trent Klatt could have been called for goaltender interference, but the referees did not catch it. Robitaille scored his 18th goal of the season after just 11 goals last year with the Detroit Red Wings. Robitaille, now, is only seven points away from passing Johnny Bucyk as the highest scoring left winger in NHL history.

The Kings know they need to smarten up and start playing with more hunger, especially since they are just 4 points from being out of the playoffs. "Losing a huge point at this time of the season is disappointing. It felt like a loss." (Mattias Norstrom). The captain also had a talk with the Kings earlier today after the news of both Jon Sim and Brad Norton's departure from the team to let them know that they need to focus on what they're doing out on the ice and to not change a thing. Both Sim and Norton were placed on waivers due to the comeback of Martin Straka and the acquisition of Nathan Dempsey. "We were hoping that we'd be able to keep both guys in the organization. It speaks well for them that two teams grabbed them. It's disappointing when you lose assets. They're both good guys. Great team guys." (Andy Murray). Both guys were popular on the team. "It's always a tough day when guys who have been with you the whole season leave. I mean Norton almost lost an arm in preseason. Sim was just a winner. But it is part of the game." (Ian Laperriere).

The Montreal Canadiens are on a west coast road trip that began in San Jose. The Canadiens have been on a roll lately winning six of their last seven games. Like the Kings, they are trying to secure a playoff berth after being out of it last season. As of right now, the Canadiens sit in the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference, five points ahead of the New York Islanders. The Canadiens visited the Phoenix Coyotes last night at the Glendale Arena. They also played their first game with their newest acquisition, Alexei Kovalev who came over from the New York Rangers. Kovalev, however, did not have the start he was hoping for. Kovalev suffered a shoulder injury in the second period and left the game. He is listed as day-to-day and will miss the rest of their road trip. "It's frustrating for sure. You got one of the top guys in the league, and he gets hurt." (Jose Theodore). The Canadiens did not let that spoil their game as they got some help from their special teams to beat the Coyotes. Pierre Dagenais and Saku Koivu both scored power play goals. Another of their newest acquisitions, Jim Dowd who came over from the Minnesota Wild also scored in his first game with the team. Dowd scored a short-handed goal. Richard Zednik also added a goal for the Canadiens which turned out to be the game winner. The Coyotes tried their best to come back from a 4-1 deficit as Mike Comrie and Chris Gratton both scored to make it 4-3 but the Canadiens kept the Coyotes off the score sheet after that to secure a 4-3 victory and two points in the standings. "That type of game, we should have controlled it from there on in, but for the second game in a row we took some bad penalties, so we certainly have to get better in that area." (Claude Julien).

Is Kovalev going to play tonight?

Quote:
Coach Claude Julien listed Kovalev as day-to-day.

The Russian forward was hurt when he extended his right arm to reach for a puck along the boards, and Coyotes forward Shane Doan crashed into him 9:22 into the period.

Yes we do. Because if we should happen to lose there's a possibility that St. Louis could catch us before the weekend is through.

We need to start finishing periods stronger. They started letting the Habs dominate towards the end, the same way they let Minny take over in the 3rd the other night.

You bet.

And for all of you who are watching this game in LA, DAve Taylor did an interview with HNIC.

Nothing new. He said he's been looking for a forward, but won't mortgage the future....said that he was happy with the current team if he couldn't find another player...

Kelley Hrudey has been an outspoken critic of Cechmanek for the past few months and asked DT what he was planning, to which Dave responded that Roman's been skating, and that he was going to get a read on his status over the next few days. However, as long as RC is healthy, Mr. Taylor will not make a move for a goalie.
