Kovalchuk Named Atlanta Captain (Should Cool Rumours for Now).

Kovalchuk was just named the captain of the Thrashers at their annual Charity Casino Night.

Kovy's response upon being asked to come to the podium by Don Waddell for the announcement?

"Have I been traded?"

Who was captain before him?

Good for him. I really want him to stay in Atlanta and get some help out there.

Bobby Holik was captain last season and at the start of the season an annoucement was made that captain would be determined from five alternative captains named. The five being Kovalchuk, Kozlov, Havelid, Armstrong, Schneider.

They're trying to get more value from him so by giving him the "C" they think that it'll raise his stock.

He's very likely going nowhere, and never was.

Common sense dictates that a rebuilding team rebuilds around a 25 year old superstar.

Not move him.

Ilya was one of the few guys putting in a decent effort in Atlanta on most nights, and the guy was producing with linemates of Reasoner and Thorburn of all people.

The other night he got a regular PK shift for the first time in his NHL career and actually did really well.

On top of things, he's been very classy in his statements about the team while they've been losing. He hasn't said anything Hossa-like about not being committed to the team.

In short, he's earned it more than anyone else on the team.

It's not like captain's haven't been traded before. But I am all for players staying with the team they were drafted by for their entire careers. I grew up a huge Lemieux fan as well as a big Yzerman fan (bc boy!) and I liked how they never wanted to play anywhere else but Pittsburgh and Detroit, respectfully. Same with another bc boy, Sakic.

I hope Kovalchuk stays with the team, through thick and thin, be the franchise player and the face of the franchise till he retires. I hope Bouwmeester stays in Florida as well and Horton stops being a baby and sucks it up to be a leader. The Panthers are finally on track to be a solid team with the right people running the team and to lose Jay Bo when things are going well would suck.

Anyways, good on Kovy, while most pens fans still hate him. I've always been a fan, since his rookie year and damn I still remember his young stars game at the Allstar Game when he scored like it was no body's business and at will.

Wasnt sure. I feel bad for the guy playing with no support, Hossa and Savard leaving and all. What does everyone think the odds are that he resigns?

The Thrashers have some impressive youngsters on defense and with a big off season coming up, if they can find a top 6 center or trade for one, they are back in business imo. When Kovalchuk has a top flight center with him to ease up the pressure and be the playmaker to his sniper...they play very well.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gaborik ends up in Atlanta in the off season either, other teams might be seeing him as a high risk high reward type of guy and might not really offer him much, but I could see Atlanta offering him the right deal.

His contract is up in the summer of 2010. I think this off season will be huge for Atlanta, they could extend his contract and pick up a few players to help ease the pressure off the guy. I would say the odds are very good.

"Respectively", not "respectfully", even tho I respect them a lot as well.

But yes, I love 'em. It gives me even more ammo to throw at the "OMG GRETZKY WAS TRADED SO LECAVALIER FOR A 3RD IS TOTALLY REASONABLE" crowd.
