The Consolidated Chris Clark Captaincy Thread

When do you think OV will get the C on his jersey.

The way he has played this year shows he is a leader on this team. And Clark has not produced at all this season, although I think Clark is a good guy it might be time to pass the torch.

What are your thoughts?

I think captain Clark will finish his contract, and then the team will "unfortunately" lack the cap-space to resign him, he will go elsewhere, and Ovechkin will get the C.

I don't think the Caps want to look bad by trading their captain, and I doubt that Clark will give up his captaincy.

I agree. Clark's going to play out the string, and keep the C. He'll not be brought back after his contract expires in July 2011, and Ovechkin will get the C at that time.

That, or he gets traded at some point. If so, the C passes to Ovechkin.

So a Clark trade or July 2011, whichever comes first.

No time soon. Honestly, having heard Ovy comment on it in the past, he seems to think older players should have that role. I don't think he wants it right now (not that he wouldn't take it if offered). I just think he's happy with his position on the team and knows the role Clark plays.

Ovechkin has operated as the Captain with an A for a while now. I seriously doubt a C is going to make a difference.

So my response is more: "who cares?"

NHL on the fly has 1 picture of OV they use all the time when they flash up his stats and in it he is wearing the "C"

Gary Green gets confused by this and has called Ovechkin the Capitals captain.

so there ya go.

Chris Clark is the Captain in part because of his courage and his no quit attitude. The idea that he would quit as captain is ridiculous and totally against his character.

Most people have NO idea that there is more to being the captain than having a C on your sweater and being the leader in the room and on the bench. There are duties and responsibilities. This is why Ov thinks an older player should be the C. This is a reason why Donald Brashear has the role he has in the Caps leadership.

This is sort of why I wonder about Crosby being team Captain in Pittsburgh. Afterall he is still living in Mario's house. I wonder a little if Crosby's lack of experience and his lack of being able to relate to the bottom half of the lineup isnt a contributing factor in the Pens recent collapse.

When the Caps go off the rails and need leadership, they rely on Brashear, Fedorov and Clark to settle the nerves. Not Ov. Ov is likely one that needs his nerves settled and his energies refocused. Its still got to be Ov that makes things happen.

When a new player comes to town, would they go to Ovy or Clark about where's a good place to settle the family? Do they go to Ovy or Clark about a good guy to handle his taxes and is liscensed locally? Do they go to Ovy or Clark when wanting to ask sensitive questions about teammates or coaches?

In all of those situations, I would think Clark, which is why he's the Captain.

This may be a little off topic, but is the second A that Brashear had a rotating A? I ask this because he no longer wears it and Backstrom has it.

Green wore it last game...so yeah...appears it's rotating.

I've said this before, but Brooksy should get an "A" at some point.

He did. At one point it was Ovie - Backstrom - Laich, if only for a game or two.

Given the bad luck thats come with being captain of the Caps, I hope Ovechkin never gets the A. I think Karl will have it at some point though.

Not the first time this topic has been discussed on these boards

I don't see why Ovechkin should wear the C at this time, some of the reasons are already posted here as it's not just about the games. Ovechkin wears an A, seems to work at this time.

I'm not a fan of the C being transferred while the guy losing the C is still on the team, but there are different circumstances where this has happened around the League. One thing to note is that Chris Clark has played on a team, Calgary Flames, where this happened. In that case from all published reports on the topic, it was the choice of the guy removing the C, Craig Conroy, to hand it over to the new C, Iginla. Context is important and one thing to note is that Iginla was in his 7th or 8th season with the Flames when this happened. (edit: addn: and one other thing, it happened heading into the season, IIRC, not mid-season)

About players wearing the A's, with all the injuries, it does seem that the second A has been rotating with a number of different players wearing the A.

Yea, as soon as the Caps can get rid of Clark's salary Ovechkin will get the C.

Just as a disclaimer: none of us actually know what goes on in the locker room, or the true character of these players when a camera isn't stuck in their face.

That being said, Laich just comes off as that kind of player. Does he deserve an "A" - from what I gather, he doesn't only deserve it, he needs it. The team needs him to have it.

Backstrom for example had admitted that he's not a talker, but more of a silent leader. To me, that just doesn't work. Given, Backstrom is not a permanent "A" but you get my point. If Ovechkin wasn't in DC, I'd say Laich for Captain. I'm just that crazy about his impact on the team.

Cool, I just remembered he's my avatar and now I look biased. Oh well.

Since Clark has resumed being an on ice captain I have no problem with him keeping the C. But it comes down to what kind of captain Bruce wants. He inherited Clark. But Bruce likes physical play, and I suspect he likes that edge (that Clark has) in any potential captain.

i'll say this for Laich - he is pretty much our default interviewee these days, which says alot since he is by no means a "star" or household name... he says the right things, works his bag off on the ice & seems to be a leader among the younger guys.

i like the leadership this team has at multiple stratas. you got the old school blue collar guys guys in Brash, Clark & Bradley, the old school elite Fedorov, and alot of youth that has varying and emerging degrees of leadership in AO, Laich, Greener.
