I dont see how its possible. I dont know why I clicked this thread nor why I am actually responding.

First off, would part of the the idea of trading Vinny to dump salary? If thats the case it makes no sense for Tampa as they would have to take at least one of our big contracts.

Secondly, realistically, how much are we gonna have to give to get a player like Vinny? Im thinking at least Staal and Dubinsky, probably Rozsival and a 1st. Way too much young talent for such a huge contract.

You have to ask yourself if you would want to give up such a significant amount of talent for a guy who is arguably not even top 5 in the league.

It makes no sense for Tampa and unless you could steal him without giving up Staal, I would not make a deal for him.

He has a 11 year contract.

The French media is "reporting" of the Rangers interest in Vinny.

I don't want to gut our entire roster for one player. Don't get me wrong, if I could have any player in the NHL he's right up there with Ovy, Malkin, Kovy etc.

I'm still relatively new here but it seems that EVERY big name player that is rumored to be traded (i.e. Gaborik), is rumored to be coming to New York. I think its the medias way of garnering interest in their story. Not saying Vinny won't end up here, personally I can't see how its possible.

Bingo. I'll be interested when I see a trade rumor that doesn't include the Rangers. And honestly, what team is not at least "interested" in Vinny? Don't get excited here fellas, ain't happening.

No way Lecavalier is coming here, everyone has him going to the Habs. I could see him going to LA, the Kings need a maque player like Lecavalier, they haven't had one like that since Gretzky.

We ain't getting no Lecavlier, though I would gladly give up anyone not named Lundqvist, Staal, Zherdev, or Dubinsky to get him (assuming it also meant the wonderful news that we would be moving one or two of the group that I like to refer to as the "big pay, small play" group, Gomez/Drury/Redden/Rozsival).

If the goal for the Lightning is to cut salary, what does this deal do for them?

It should be pointed out that most people here do calculations based on the "cap hit" number, as we are all conditioned to thinking of how much play money a given team can use under the cap. The cap hit number is the average salary that the player makes over the life of his contract. This number can be - and usually is - vastly different than the real cash salary that the player earns in a given year. One of the problems that Lecavalier's contract has is that it is waaaaaaaay front-loaded - so his cap hit is only 6.875MM, while his actual salary over the next SEVEN YEARS is 10MM. Here is a comparison of Lecavalier's contract with that of Scotty Gomez starting in 09-10:

10.000 10.000 10.000 10.000 10.000 10.000 10.000 8.500 4.000 1.500 1.000 UFA
8.000 8.000 7.500 5.500 4.500 UFA

That's a real cash difference of $16.5MM over the next 5 years (and that doesn't even count the three remaining huge money years left on Lecavalier's contract after Gomez's contract expires). If the TBL owner is truly trying to save money these numbers will matter more to him than the artificial legal machinations for the salary cap.

Having said that, if he's really strapped for cash right now, I still don't know that he'd want to take on a Gomez like contract. More likely he'd want guys whose contracts come off the books entirely after this year plus a bunch of prospects. (Then again, if he's THAT strapped for cash, he should be looking to sell the team entirely.)

That's a good point BRF.

However, I'm still not sure we have the assets to go after another huge paycheck. Even if he is 10x the player Gomez is, I don't think it's logical to purge the prospect pool in order to acquire him. It's one thing to add a big salary via free agency. It's quite another to trade for a big salary and lose assets at the same time.

Vinny has an 11 year contract.

Montreal can make the deal without requiring Tampa to take back contracts past this season because has no forwards signed for next season.

He wants to be in Canada.

Plus, he isn't old and washed up, why would he be a Ranger

For once, and only once, this scenario is not totally insane for the Canadiens because they have so much salary coming off the books. He really is a phenomenal player when properly motivated, and assuming his injuries aren't career-hampering, he's still young.

Are TB's owner schitzo?
First, they take over and announce they will pump talent into the team and spend on Free Agents like Malone.
Then they trade their best defenseman in Boyle and now talk about doing so to the future HOFer Vinny?
Huh?

lol...

this will never happen.

what do we have to trade? besides lundy and staal, no one on our team has any value. gomez, drury, and redden have horrible contracts. no one wants them. dubinsky, dawes, prucha, callahan at this point are nothing more than 3rd liners. we have maybe 3 solid prospects which we can't spare.

this will never happen. the NYR will never see another 7M+ player (actually worth their contract) until one of drury, gomez, or redden comes off the books. we have 3 more seasons of this torture, folks.

You mean he isn't an aging superstar like "JAGR, SHANAHAN, DIONNE"?

Who knows, maybe we can convince Tampa that Gomez + a bunch of 1st round picks is worth the cap savings

I think they can do this and not blink.

The only real loss would be Pleckanec. Higgins is a nice player, but he's a 2nd/3rd liner at best and Georges can and will be replaced by O'Byrne and or McDonagh

I'm not seeing a problem parting with those players for Vinny. Not a problem in the least bit.

That said, I'm not so sure that TB is going to want Higgins. More likely they are going to ask for and get Pleckanec (Ryan McDonagh and or Subban) Latanedresse and a 1st

Seems like alot no doubt, but we are talkng about a franchise center in the prime years of his career. None of those guys mentioned above are game breakers or deal breakers for that matter.

Will be interesting to say the least.
