Goal/Crease preference

I was watching clips from several of the old finals in the 90's and I always like the way the inside of the goal was painted the same shade of blue the crease was. I've been wondering why that was changed and what you guys think (thought) about it. The red goal line had a bit of greater contrast so I imagine the original reason was to better judge goals. Also why was the shape of the crease changed from a semi circle to the truncated circle in North American play? The first reason that comes to mind is to create a greater area near the net for an attacking player to play the puck for more scoring, but the change was before the 'New NHL'.
