Says a lot about where Boudreau sees Erskine fitting in.

Realistically speaking, I don't think that is Boudreau's game plan for Green. Do you?
Green doesn't young buck up and down the ice because he is out of control. Its because that is his assignment from the boss.

I'd say it's more because his outlet passing still needs a lot of work. He's more successful skating in and establishing the offensive zone than he is at setting up a controlled breakout. So he skates it in past the blue line.

If the Green-Erskine pair works out well, it will be a coup for the Caps in several respects.

First, at $1.2 million for the next two seasons after this, Erskine is an expensive seventh defenseman, and maybe an unnecessary one that counts under the salary cap if the Caps young D continue to improve and move up from Hershey and the minors. However, if Erskine becomes Green's regular partner at even strength, Erskine is a steal at $1.2 million.

But second and most importantly, if this pair works, the Caps have an enforcer out on the ice much of the time when Green, AO, Semin and Backstrom are playing at even-strength. Think about it. At least at home when the Caps have the last line change, BB likes to put Green out there when AO & Co. are out there quite regularly. With Erskine paired with Green, if the opposing team tries to take any too physical liberties with the Caps' Young Guns, Erskine is already on the ice. Brashear may be on the bench, but he is rarely on the ice with AO, Green & Co. (Moreover, Brashear may not be back next year, given his age, the young players continuing to push for playing time with the Caps, and salary cap constraints). In addition, as we all know, if the pairing is Green-Schultz, the Sgt. certainly doesn't provide any counter-intimidation factor.

Yes, Erskine could pay huge dividends for the Caps if he can play the defensive stalwart and tough guy when Green, AO & Co. are on the ice at even strength taking the offensive against the opponent. It seems unlikely that Erskine will be able to handle the defensive stalwart part of this equation, but I'm curious to see how he does.

I know Bruce likes all his defensemen to step up and contribute offensively - keep up the pressure, and some pairings are more natural in doing that. Green Erskine, in the past you automatically think, Erskine you stay back let Green go crazy offensively. But you will see Erskine move up into the play tonight as do all our D, and maybe it will in an odd way teach Green to be stronger defensively. I dunno, but I want a head coach to try ALL RD and LD pairings over the course of a season. Given that there are only 3 pairs, its easy enough to do. And it helps come injury time if nothing else.

Given the circumstances, these D pairings are ideal for playing a fast Edmonton team. Each pair has some mobility.

Jurskine would get cannibalized by the likes of Cogliano and Cole.

No worries guys, the Oilers are as soft as a butter pancake. There is a reason we're last in the league in hits.

The Oilers can be a funny bunch, though, world beaters one night and rudderless the next. Their coaching probably leaves something to be desired, but that team as built has some thump in it. Cole can be one of the league's better hitters, as denizens of the SE Division know well, but he may be on the downside and he has hot and cold streaks, both for production and for physical play. I'm sure no one was banking on a sophomore slump from Gagner, though it's not the first time a talented young player's production dipped somewhat in year two.

They will miss Hemsky and Nilsson more than the pure physical element, I think. It could come down to what kind of goaltending they get tonight. Somewhat up and down, I've been generally impressed with Roloson this season.

I don't mind the Erskine-Green pairing. Gotta play physical against Edmonton. Hoping this game will get us momentum going into the Pittsburgh game.

I am not sure that is what Strung was talking about. My read was that he was suggesting "plays somewhat responsible, with a pinch here and there.." Green doesn't so much jump into the play or pinch now and then. Bruce described Green's assignment sometime back as taking open space in the offensive zone whenever its there. Poti pinches now and then. Green doesn't join the rush so much as he is expected to consistantly be a part of the rush and part of the attack once the zone is established at even strenth.

Good luck tonight.

I look forward to matching our superstar left winger Dustin Penner to your superstar left winger.

Liam Reddox vs Alex Semin should be a great match up too

.....

....
......
...
.......

Shawn Horcoff is doubtful to play tonight.

Which would leave the Oilers 4 centers as

Gagner
Cogliano
Pouliot
Brodziak

Thats under 500 combined NHL games lol
