2017 NHL Draft Thread.

What are Carolina Hurricanes biggest needs for upcoming draft.
Is it offence, defense or goaltending or all positions.

If you was Ron Francis who you would take Carolina's first pick.
This 2017 NHL draft isn't so good what two past drafts ( 2015 and 2016) were.

How many draft picks Carolina has next June's draft and how high they are going to draft.

Here's some prospects who might be available for Carolina Hurricanes 1st pick.
Eeli Tolvanen

Kristian Vesalainen

Owen Tippet
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=201664

Gabe Vilardi
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=286867

Klim Kostin
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=312823.

Timothy Liljegren
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=224910

Who of these gyus would be BPA for Carolina's 1st pick.

If Carolina is again taking some Finnish prospect in later rounds there's many options on that.
Teuvo Teravainen's little brother Eero Teravainen 5'10 tall left-handed puck moving defenseman is draft eligible next June.
He's not top ranked Finnish prospects in this draft but he might worth of late round pick ( rounds 5-7)

yeah not sure why nolan patricks not on that list

we couldve traded cam ward at the deadline last year for a mid rounder...

but holding on to him mightve gotten us a top 5 pick this year! go rf, way to see where cam's real value lies!

Boy, what a great 2 periods that was. Our hopes were high with scoring goals and then it was downhill after the Winnipeg 3rd period. Now it's time for a reality check, let's get Nolan!

Currently second last in the league... which is where we were December last year (when LA was also out of the playoffs). We all know where this is gonna end up. 17th place finish and pass over a Kailer Yamamoto at the draft for another defenseman.

In a world where we draft Patrick, would we try to move Jordan on? The future would obviously be a Patrick-Rask 1/2 punch, what piece(s) would he fetch?

A 123 punch with Patrick/Rask/Staal sounds better. That would most likely push Lindholm out IMO.

Here comes a rant, and I admit the season is a pup so whatever.

but...

I know no one ever wants to say that our absence of #1 or #2 picks over the playoff-less years is a major problem. Look at EDM! Yeah, yeah. The thing is, for a team like the Hurricanes who don't have a large budget, draw for elite talent, or top coaches it is a problem. Especially given the talent that I see in the staff. Just think what Ronnie & Co. could build around a player like Stamkos, McDavid, or Tavares as an example.

This cycle of picking no better than 5 and getting fortunate with late 1st and 2nd rounders is really getting us nowhere. Yes I know we can thank the hockey gods (and solid scouting) for the likes of Skinner, Rask, Slavin, Faulk, Pesce, Aho etc but at the end of the day, it's not enough anymore to get a few above average players every few drafts. For the most part, the teams that succeed regularly, are stacked with talent and have a true #1 in the captain's chair with other elite-ish talent to boot.

It's going to take more, and like others, I'm trying to have patience and faith that Francis is working on this. However, he can only work so much magic with the hand he's dealt, and he has worked some magic to say the least.

My concern is the chronic losing culture, and what it does to this team's psyche every season, and the stigma that could keep top talent from signing with us in the future, in the event we can even offer them a decent contract. I mean, I'm aware the Wacko Lacko Tandem, and one-hit away-from-death phenom is enticing, but c'mon.

Scoring isn't really a problem, yet, but you can almost bet your ass that they won't put it all together at the same time with this group. We have a team of hot and cold, except for the goaltenders, they're both just cold. Realistically, can we really expect more from a team comprised mostly of cross-your-fingers draft picks, and other teams castaways?

I agree with pretty much everything except the theory of "needing" a first or second overall pick. I get how some teams rebuilt their team with this premise, PIT and CHI for example, but I don't see our team resembling those anytime soon with multiple top 2 picks. Our blueprint of a team resembles NSH and DET. Teams with great players, not superstars, but get **** done and make the playoffs. The main thing missing is a goalie, which I hope gets fixed one way or another.

Roughly 10% of the way into the season we have the worst record and goal differential in the conference, so yes.

...with no home games. Not to say that being at home automatically means wins, but once it's 50/50 we should have a more accurate portrayal of the team.

Also totally went over my head that Patrick would have 3 ELC years.

I think if we finish low enough and don't win the lottery, we'll make a big push to trade up to #1 overall. A team like Buffalo/Toronto winning the lottery would help a lot in a situation like this.

I haven't watched him, but every report I have seen has said that Chychrun has been great in Phoenix and will likely stick on the roster. Could see this being a big miss for the Canes in picking Bean over him.
