Canes Claim Nestrasil

http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=740129

Quote:
RALEIGH, NC – Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has claimed forward Andrej Nestrasil (ahn-DRAY NEHS-tra-shihl) on waivers from the Detroit Red Wings. Nestrasil will join the Hurricanes on their current road swing which continues tonight at Los Angeles.
“Andrej is a young player with good size who we feel can contribute to our group of forwards,” said Francis. “He has improved in each of his pro seasons and took a big step last year with Grand Rapids.”

Nestrasil, 23, made his NHL debut in Detroit’s season opener on Oct. 9, and has earned two assists in 13 games with the Red Wings this season. The Prague, Czech Republic, native spent all of the 2013-14 season with Detroit’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, notching 16 goals and earning 20 assists (36 points) in 70 regular-season games. Nestrasil ranked tied for fourth in scoring among Griffins skaters in the postseason with six points (4g, 2a) in Grand Rapids’ 10 Calder Cup playoff games.

The Red Wings drafted Nestrasil (6’3”, 200 lbs.) in the third round, 75th overall, in the 2009 NHL Draft. Since turning professional in 2011-12, he has scored 22 goals and earned 24 assists (46 points) in 120 AHL regular-season games, and captured the AHL’s Calder Cup championship with the Griffins in 2013. Nestrasil also has played in 91 regular-season games with the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye, totaling 18 goals and 52 assists in those contests. Prior to turning professional, he played three seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) with Victoriaville and P.E.I. Nestrasil represented his native Czech Republic at the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-18 Championship, as well as the 2010 and 2011 World Junior Championship.

Never heard of the guy, TBH. But I'm sure Peters had something to do with it.

Since we claimed him, he has to stay on Canes NHL roster for 30 days I read.

Well, one thing's for sure, if he's a 23-year-old in the Detroit system who made his debut this year, he's probably NHL-ready...

Seriously.

I'm sure Peters is familiar with him and his development.

More than 1 team put in claim on Nestrasil. CAR lowest in standings, tho. CAR coach Bill Peters obviously familiar with player from DET days
Wow, seems like this might not be an insignificant pickup...

he's ok at everything, but doesn't really standout or suck in any area. has size but doesn't really use it to his advantage. has some skill but hasn't shown it at NHL level.

he was in ECHL 2 years ado and all seemed lost (and had seemed for a while, in fact). he was meh in AHL last year until late in the season when järnkrok got traded, nestrasil was bumped up in the lineup and got more opportunities. played really well down the stretch.

no one expected him to make red wings roster either this season.

i think he's an NHLer, solid depth F.

had excellent fancy stats in small sample and soft minutes.

your previous acquisition from us was much better, though .

I'm not sure that's the case, where did you read that? If you remember when Boychuk was waived, he didn't stay on the Pens for that long and they waived him. Then Nashville picked him up and he only lasted a few days there before they waived him. There's nothing in the CBA saying the Canes have to keep him on the roster for 30 days. The only limitation is that they can't trade him this season.

But, if they want to send him down, they have to put him on waivers again and I'm pretty sure if the Canes try to waive him to send him to the AHL, he won't pass through waivers. According to McKenzie, there were others that also made claims so he likely won't clear. That applies no matter how many games he plays or how long he's on the roster.

Section 13 here.

Good luck with Nesty, gents. The guy is able to handle an NHL position well enough, but don't expect him to be any kind of a game-breaker at any facet of the game.

He has one of the highest corsi ratings in the league (I'm guessing against really soft competition) and he's 6'2" 200+ lbs.

Meh

Suddenly, there's a GDT idea for the Colorado game on Saturday when he (presumably) plays for us.

You know.... Look at what Peters has done with Rask, Terry, and Boychuck. I see no reason why this guy cannot contribute in some shape or form plus he is big. A step in the right direction. Peters obviously had a say in this.

Much like Muller before him, I'm sure Peters has some ideas about how to tweak the roster to fit his scheme. This is probably the first such move, and I think we've seen hints of others to come.
