The Checketts interview was good because the reporters asked good questions. They didn't get all boneheaded like they do here in Chicago or in New York and ask off-the-wall questions that have to do with a player's personal life or some superfluous BS about something non-hockey. (Read: The Tortorella interview after Game 5)
Checketts said "all the right things", but one thing stood out. When asked if he would go in the locker room and talk with the guys, he said no. He will shake each player's hand and then head back (east presumably). He knows he's not the coach and he has no place to speak with the team right after this game (he can later). Now....whether he actually spoke with them or not is another matter.....but it was important for him to say that he'll just congratulate them and go home.
The JD interview was kinda funny, in that JD likes to ask himself questions and the answer them. He didn't do it a whole lot in these interviews, but it's funny when he does.
His comments about Jackman's knee injury were informative. We still don't know the extent of the injury, but it was good to hear that Jackman was "playing through injury".
Also what stood out was JD's comments on the Blues 5-on-3 PP in Game 1. What a swing of events.
The main concern in Part 1 is that he said it is up to Colaiacovo to increase his conditioning during the summer, and I think it is up to the management to ride him until he does. Here's the deal...if Cola comes back next season with no physical progression, then we and the media will blame JD for not managing Cola's off-season workout regimen. It's like in the military...if Private Smith messes up, it is not Private Smith's fault, it is Sergeant Johnson's fault. Cola's conditioning IS JD's business.
In Part 2 JD continued to bring up his playing days. While it is kinda fun to hear about that, it seemed like he was trying to steal the spotlight and remind reporters that he was a player too.
Brewer's 2nd surgery is quite alarming.
I am 100% supportive of Cole's decision to return to Notre Dame this fall and am glad JD agrees.
Regarding all of our youth and whether we can keep them all, JD's comment was a slap in the face. Up yours buddy! The fans didn't ask you to do anything. Your job is to draft players and then either keep them or not. We fans have legitimate concerns, but don't blame the Blues future youth logjam on us.
All in all, my question to JD is, "Who pissed in your Cheerios?"
Everything jd says is music to my ears, he knows if EJ and Pietro push themseles during the summer and camp, they will be a huge addition to the offensive punch from the defense. No more fastracking was another thing I liked to hear. If guys like Eller, Sonne, and Palushaj arent ready then let them learn to produce at a high and consistent level in the ahl first. I also think forcing a trade in the offseason is unnecessary, we started with the idea to build from within, it is hard to not want to trade or sign a big name. But after this summers draft, the rebuild should officially be complete and the blues are going to let guys grow into their roles. I see 5 guys who are looking very good for top 6 roles in Oshie, Perron, Eller, Berglund, and Palushaj(sonne is very very close IMO, his ability to adapt to pro will answer our doubts or questions on his potential) and 4 top four dmen in EJ, Pietro, Cole, and Polak. I really like the core we have and so does JD. When asked whether we will be able to keep all pf them down the road, I think JD is thinking to himself that he plans on keep all of themthat pan out. Try and get your higher end players to sign at a reasonably long term at cheaper prices and the rest will follow. I hope we can keep most of these kids, it is very possible.

Our reporters really do a good job of sticking to important questions, even if they don't always ask the ones we want. That said, they still ask some pretty tough questions.

I am really glad Checketts knows how to avoid crossing any professional boundaries. No need to spur conflict needlessly.

JD does seem to ask himself questions, but he was a goalie, so he must be a little crazy! Jk
Agreed, if JD and co. don't push Cola then they should shoulder some of the blame. You can't just let the guy take the summer off. Your his boss, so you should manage him.
JD seemed on edge about the keeping the kids question. He really gave an honest answer, but not a PR friendly move if you ask me. If your gonna say that then at least make it competitive....like we only have so many spots so the most deserving will say....or something along those lines. Something or someone really must have rattled his cage.

All in all, my question to JD is, "Who pissed in your Cheerios?"
I think the attitude was really directed at JR rather than the fans despite what it looks like.
Although, JD has blasted fan commentary from call in shows(understandable considering I've heard a guy ask " What's up with that Kevin Yoshi guy we got at school?").
I think it started with a huge number of fans remarking on Brewers poor play, which eventually ****ed off JD and AM. The real eff you to the fans is when they named Brewer captain. THAT was a slap in the face to me as a fan.
Then AMs handling of Perron was criticized ad nauseum and that really ****ed JD off because AM was handling our young guys just fine in the majority of instances.
Both JD and AM have been flippant and dismissive of fan opinion on many occasions, but I tend to give JD a free pass because not only did he have to deal with criticism(both warranted and not), he also had the stress of approaching a strong minded coach and asking him to change some things this past offseason. In other words, JD had to back his people even though he probably agreed with some of the things fans were saying.
Q: Some fans worry about all of your young talent - Perron, Oshie, Johnson, Berglund - all coming up for contracts in a couple of years. Do you worry about being able to keep them all?
JD: “Tell (the fans) they are the ones who wanted us to go out and find all of these guys. So we found them. We’ll deal with that when it comes. Water is going to seek it’s own level. If they’re deserving players, we’ll do what we can to keep them. If we have seven, eight, nine guys that all become great players, all the same age, we won’t be able to keep them all . . . that’s just the way it is. Same with any other organization. It will be a nice problem to have.”
I think the phrase "some fans" is what prompted the reaction. JD doesn't particularly like fans who question what the team is doing. Nor does he like that JR is giving them a voice. IMO, JR is the best beat writer we've ever had because he sticks to information, but I appreciate that he asks these questions on our behalf.

...edit...
Yeah, you're probably right. Who knows what JD was doing or what his expressions were during the interview. This could all be tongue-in-cheek and we wouldn't even know it.
Basically saying:
- how great STL fans are with how they reacted to the sweep
- how the Blues kind of accelerated their development and probably could have gone another year without making the playoffs (but people would have expected more)
- free agency
- Colaiacovo loves STL, moved there, plans on spending the summer there to train into the best shape he's ever been in
- JD's inductment and awards and such
I know David will be just a sophomore, but I think he'll fill part of the leadership vacuum left by Gilroy. He seems to hunger for that role, and he has always claimed it at some point with the various teams he's played for. I'll be following him closely again this coming season looking for him to do just that.
If you live in the area, apparently you can attend in person (Harpo's in Chesterfield - I'm assuming you locals know what that means) and win prizes and stuff.
For those who weren't there or didn't listen, it was a pretty casual thing. Berglund said he just started skating again. Apparently he shares his name with some Swedish pop artist or something.
There was a cool little sound byte of Berglund interviewing Oshie during the playoffs, too.
On Saturday ill be attending the Windsor/ Niagara game, reporting on it for school and stuff like that.
So ill hopefully get to interiew the Windsor players, and was curious if anyone had any questions for Mark Cundari if i got a chance to talk to him?
I know he's not one of our top tier prospects but he's still a member of our organization!
Its not guarenteed that ill get a chance to, but still its better to be prepared. So if you have any questions let me know.
I was raised a blues fan and try to watch the blues prospects in the OHL as much as i can when they play in the Windsor area. He is the most under rated. His stats are impressive but what really freaks me out is his strength. Does he have a special off ice training or diet secret he can share with us.,.Thanks
I enjoyed reading that. Jarmo really seems to find us some kids that have impeccable character. I don't know if Ponich will ever make it but it doesn't seem like lack of effort will be an excuse if he doesn't.
Did anyone catch Army on Kerber's show on KMOX tonight. I got the first couple minutes and then had to get away from the PC and missed the rest. Is there a podcast for this show that you can go back and download?
