Paul Ranger to Philadelphia

The final option would be to consummate a trade. While the Flyers wouldn’t have to strike a deal to get their salary cap in order, a source from the Tampa Bay Lightning told the Daily Times last week the Flyers had expressed interest in injured defenseman Paul Ranger. He has been in and out of the lineup recently with an upper body injury.

Ranger, 24, has a salary cap hit of $933,000 and is signed through 2009-10, at which time he would still be a restricted free agent.
Ranger would be an awesome addition for the Flyers, and it would be a huge mistake for Tampa to give up on him. What could be going the other way?

It would have to be a huge overpay to get the Lightning to get rid of their 2nd best defenseman.

EDIT: Of course I would not be against it if we can rip them off again.

I would say it's not going to, but figuring out that Tampa front office might be harder than figuring out the economy. The only thing I could think of is that for some reason, they may like Randy Jones? Yes, no? For your (all) sake, I would hope not.

I don't think it will happen in the end though.

Ryan Parent and Andrew Alberts for Paul Ranger. I'm calling it right now.

Would TB trading away their D-Corps surprise anyone?

I'd love to get Ranger, he's a guy we'd like a lot. Make me feel better about the D-corps.

Paul Ranger is a great player and I would LOVE for him to be dealt to the Flyers because he'll put up great stats there which is good for my sim league!

True, stranger things have happened in TB recently, and with the past THREE coaches all calling out the players in the press, I think the discontent with the players attitude might be real.

Ranger for Parent and another player, maybe upshall or good prospect like Maroon?

I would guess the deal would start with the Flyers first round pick.

Nah, it would take a player because the Flyers need to take off their cap number. Since the Flyers traded almost every other pick in the draft, they need their 1st. If not, they shouldn't bother showing up for the draft.

Well we've traded away our 2nd, 3rd, and 7th but we've picked up Calgary's and San Jose's 3rd, Tampa's 6th, Anaheim's 7th, and possibly Dallas's 7th considering what the condition of the Jussi Timonen trade is. We've actually increased our # of picks but they are distributed differently. 1 1st, 2 3rds, 1 4th, 1 5th, 2 6ths, and a 7th.

A fair return would be Randy Jones+2nd round pick and a good prospect like Kalinski. I know this sounds a little bit like overpayment, but you don't find a player like him for under 1 million Dollar.

Switch the 2nd to a 3rd because we don't have a 2nd until 2011. I'd take that deal. I'd be happy to be rid of Jones, a 3rd is meh and Kalinski is a good young player but nothing great.

The Lightning have arguably the worst defense, personnel-wise, in the NHL.

Why would they get rid of their second best defenseman?

If Ranger were to become available (which i doubt), Bob Murray should be very interested. He'd look great playing with Pronger or Niedermayer.

I don't know, but it's not a wise assumption to just think they'll make a move this stupid.

Based on what, exactly? Recent history would suggest otherwise.

Because unlike Boyle Ranger is liked, respected and dirt cheap.
