Staal led the playoffs in scoring, I'd say that's pretty instrumental.

ABSOLUTELY, but you still don't win without the star guy who can do everything. Maybe they're the kind of player that needs a counterpoint, Carter for Richards and Brindy for Staal.

Staal is a better offensive player in my opinion, but i'd much rather have Richards on my team. he is in my opinion, THE complete package.

Push for me. I like both players tremendously. Staal at his best is easily better than Richards at his best, IMO. Last year after Brind'Amour went down, Staal outscored Malkin, Ovechkin, Crosby, and others from that point on (around 1.5 PPG I think), while being a top PK man and overall beast in his own zone and nearly carried Carolina into the playoffs (if not for a choketacular finish and an immensely flawed point system). But Richards has been much more consistent and isn't prone to having "floaty" night like Staal unfortunately has.

It's the team around him. The only other parts of the core of the 05-06 that aren't towards the end of their careers are Williams, Ward, Cole (who has since been traded off to help the defense) and Commodore (who was traded to Ottawa after playing piss poor hockey the first half of last season). Brind'Amour is starting to really show his age, Stillman was slowing down badly when they traded him off last year, Whitney is starting to slow, Hedican and Wesley have both retired, and Gerber hasn't been the same since leaving Carolina.

I'd look for Staal to pick up his production down the stretch again this year though since he and Williams really seem to be clicking now that Williams has his game legs back and has been moved to Staal's line. Hopefully either Bowman or Boychuk proves to be legit and meshes well with Staal, that would only help his production.

As for my take on the question: push.
Richards is more consistent and "brings it" every night.
However Staal has really improved his two-way game and when he is on his game he's at the same level as any of the other top players in the league. Zach already pointed out his production from last year after Brindy went down as proof.
