I'm bored, let's start a series of polls.

Who is the top defensive forward in the NHL?

Vote to add another player.

I've really bought into all the Datsyuk love around here as of late. He's a tremendous all around player..

Datsyuk for #1
Madden for #2
Zetts for #3

Add; Jeff Carter.

Datsyuk's defensive game just keeps getting better.

He won a Selke last season largely based on his amazing ability to steal the puck and his league best +/-. He played on a line with Zetterberg, who is another one of the better defensive forwards, so when they regularly shut down opponents many probably wondered whether he was simply a product of playing on a line with Zetterberg...

Well, this season comes around and he's not playing with Zetterberg and he's currently playing better defensively then he did at any point last season.

He really has become a true shutdown forward, which is amazing being that he is 4th in league scoring.

A few other names that should be mentioned (leaving quite a few off which i'm sure will get named shortly):

Zetterberg
Koivu, M.
Kesler
Hanzal
Goc

A few big names that i'm interested in from their fans:

Madden, Alfredsson, and Pahlsson. Are these guys having down seasons defensively? In Pahlsson's case, i'm under the assumption that he's being asked to change his role a little bit. What about the other two - are they having an off year?

Would that have anything to do with how well his line contained the Thornton unit last Saturday?

Da*n you Clowe unit!

Get Madden off of that list and put Zajac in his place.

Although he's not a flashy player and rarely scores goals, Blair Betts is an excellent defensive forward. He's certainly not the best defensive forward in the league, but he deserves some recognition. He's one of the Rangers' best PKers.

Why this thread fails:
Horcoff #12 in SH TOI

Mike Fisher #70.

Edmonton PK- 28th, 76.3%

And Datsyuk is 127th yet he's running away with the top slot. SH'ed TOI isn't everything.

Alfie has been great this season, but he hasn't really found his niche yet, and it seems like he's been trying almost too hard to find it this year. He seems to be coughing the puck up more this year, so it might be fair to say he's having a bit of a down season. He's still great, but down season would be an accurate way of putting it.

Richards is getting too much love. He's GREAT defensively but I don't think it's reasonable to include protecting the puck in that and he turns it over way too often.

I haven't watched the Wings much this year, but Zetterberg was clearly better than Datsyuk in the playoffs last year - he was the guy relied on in 3-5 PKs.
