Kovalev wins the MVP, a good choice, I think.

Can I say I was impressed by how much Ovie actually appeared to give a crap (relatively speaking) about backchecking? That stands out to me in the ASG, especially when it resulted in him getting PK time in such a "critical" situation.

I think a few of the East guys wanted to win it for the fans...Kovalev and Ovechkin and Thomas (for whatever reason).

Well, Ovechkin might not have been the MVP, but he sure was the King of that City for a few days.

Too bad he couldn't of had a few other Caps to enjoy it. Green is tailor made for the All Star game.

And wow, I almost feel bad for Vinny. I think deep down he might want to be there, but most of him doesn't want to bail on Tampa Bay after having made a commitment.

I just want to say God bless Alex Ovechkin.

This town absolutely fell in love with him over the weekend, and he certainly entertained the Hell out of me.

Enjoy him guys (like I have to tell you that).

I don't know... Lecavalier looks like he felt the pressure before even getting dealt to that club. What kind of weight would he feel in playoff season as the Habs' leader? I wonder if he can hack the pressure. I'm not sure he has the disposition to handle being the messiah.

I watched the last time Tampa went into Montreal and Vinny got booed (for signing the long term deal in Tampa). They only cheered him now because of the trade rumors. I think Lecavalier knows all to well that the fans can change their opinion on him overnight and would be too nervous to play there as the teams go to guy.

A friend of mine from college's stepdad had season tickets near Vinny's dad for a few years and apparently they still talk at the games sometimes and the latest update (earlier this season) I got on the subject of Lecavalier staying in Tampa was: Vinny loves it in the area and he loves the amount of attention he gets - he gets recognized when he goes out to dinner but its not on a ridiculous level. Vinny's dad (family) loves it in the area down there as well, so you know he has the support to stay there.

If he does go to Montreal, I think he'll wait till the end of his career when he can play a support role.

edit: Another interesting note to me from the same source as above, this one I got a long time ago and may have posted before somewhere, that there was a rift between Richards and Lecavalier after Richards signed the big contract. I guess Vinny or his dad thought it was for too much money. I lean towards his dad because it was also implied that they felt this way because there would be less money for Vinny when it was his turn. I think if Lecavalier was mad it would be because Richards didn't leave the team enough room to bring in an experienced goalie (in terms of team budget).

I know there were some reports on Lecavalier and Richards friendship growing apart, so I always believed this to be true.

It almost sounds as though you are suggesting that he can call his shot.

It's not his call yet. His NTC/NMC doesn't go into effect until July when his new deal, which is the beginning of what would have been his UFA years, goes into effect. Within the window between now and the trade deadline, and the end of the season and July 1, Tampa Bay can trade Lecavalier anywhere.

If the Lightning are looking to trade Lecavalier to Montreal, they will trade him to Montreal and he has to deal with that as best he can. Those are the hazards associated with signing a long deal before you are within your UFA years. All he has guaranteed is that he will be well paid for 11 more seasons, not by whom. You can sign it and then be traded, tied on a lifetime to a particular team, whether you chose that team or not.

Point being that the decision on whether to go to Montreal or not is going to be made for him. Right now, he's doing tentative PR, just in case he's a Hab within a couple of months.

So...does he get dealt?

I'm leaning yes.

I think he does, probably for Markov, igniting a simultaneous burst of jubilation and recrimination in Montreal. It's going to take a real gem or two to pry him loose, I suspect. Markov or a signed Komisarek.

I'd take Halpern off their hands for something...but that would only work if Nylander could be moved in a separate deal.

I get the distinct impression that Oren doesn't rebuild.

They picked the wrong guy to ship out in Boyle. That right there was the nail in that coffin for this season IMO. Never understood that move. Then to move the main piece received from the Sharks for Eminger?

Hell...maybe the worst move was getting rid of Feaster.

Quite possibly, and I always thought of Feaster as something of an average to below average GM.

I'll say this for the All-Star Game... I think this weekend may have actually lit off light bulbs in the NHL marketing department. It's Ovy's world. With Sidney Crosby on the shelf, it's that much more apparent. I don't think even the stuffed shirts can ignore that any longer. He's a marketing magnet everywhere he goes.

It's high time Malkin get some pub, too.
