Tyson Sexsmith Feature Story

I recently spoke with Tyson Sexsmith for a feature here at HF. I also contacted a source with the San Jose Sharks for some input. You can read the end results HERE.

I spoke with Tyson about a week ago, in case you're wondering when the interview took place.

Cheers!

Yea, the avItars would be great!
I'd be the first one to sign-up for em too... tired of repping Michalek one. Need some diversity.

I'll Take the second! JR won't be around next season so I'm gonna have to find a new guy.

I like Sexsmith. he's a money goalie for Vancouver, and the Giants being my #1 non-Shark team, I can't help but like him. However, I am worried that he is a "system" goalie. That is that he's the product of Don Hay's ridiculously effective defensive scheme. This team has basically plugged in whatever guys it's had available over the past 5 years and dominated the WHL. This has included Tyson's time as Vancouver's starter (the better part of 3 years I believe).

However, in times when he's been outside of hte Giants system (WJC selection camp, the Canada/Russia challenge, etc.) he's looked decidedly less stellar. His first year of pro, be it in Worcester or in the ECHL, will go a long way to determining what his true pro potential is.

One thing that I noticed from the article is that Sexsmith is dealing with the challenge of plaing well without seeing too many shots in a game. This could help a ton in the NHL, especially with a team that doesn't give up many shots.

Not really. Especially being in San Jose's log-jammed system....he's gonna have some time on his hands to work things out. If he can reach top 10 status in the AHL within a couple years...then you'll know he's for real.

I'm not saying his first season is make or break or anything. I just think that he gets a gigantic boost playing for Don Hay, and we need to see that cord cut for a full year before we know what the "real" Tyson Sexsmith looks like. Whether or not he can go from that starting point (whatever it might look like) to legitimate prospect is a different matter in my mind. We just need that first year away from the goalie-coddling Giants setup to know exactly what the true heights of his assets are, and the complete depths of his flaws. That system covers up a lot. Dustin Slade went from very good WHL goalie to not being able to crack a Jr B team once he left Vancouver (granted he was also a bit of head case, but still)

Then again, DW could finagle a top five 2009 draft pick with Sexsmith as part of the package going the other way.

If he becomes a good one, I can see Sexsmith jerseys selling like hotcakes.
