The play that Kovy scored on was fantastic in my opinion. He juggled the puck on his stick then stalled it on the back of his neck. On his neck! That's tough to do on grass with a soccer ball, he did it with a puck on the ice! Then he put the puck under his skate, pulled the double spin and roofed it with a backhand. What else could he have done?
I have a feeling that this is a case of disappointment due to over-anticipation or "anticipointment".
I went through the same thing buying the game Wrestlemania for the NES as a kid. I saved my three dollar allowance for 20 weeks to go down to Woolworth's and by the $58 game (can you believe that NES games once cost that much?) I got home and was expecting Hogan and Savage to come out of my TV, give me free pizza and wrestle in my living room. When the game turned out to be a pretty run of the mill wrestling game I was devasted. However, after about 6 months of dismissing the game, I put it in one rainy afternoon and realized it wasn't that bad. In fact, it was pretty awesome after I got used to it. Sometimes we set our expectations so high, they are never satisfied.
If Kovalev had travelled through time brought Teddy Roosevelt, James Dean and Phantom Joe Malone back with him to form a barber shop quartet to sing the national anthem at centre ice, then cured cancer and solved the crisis in the Middle East before scoring a goal on some futuristic, 2001: A Space Oddessey gravity defying move, then maybe the dissenters would all be happy (maybe). But, pulling off some amazing moves that didn't change the world make him Alex Snorelev in the eyes of some.
As far as I'm concerned, the Kovalev move where he had the puck under his skate was to me, and a bunch of non hockey lovers watching with me, the nicest move which also ended up in a goal.
I know a lot of fans found this event boring but I was with 7 people who don't watch hockey and they quite enjoyed that event which is a good thing.
What Ovechkin did might not have deserved him to win but he brought something that the others couldn't, personality and sheer fun.
The players should try to SCORE. Otherwise it's pointless. Putting a rookie goalie out there kinda break the fun, coz you know he won't stop the puck (nothing against you Jason?)
That's why the shootouts at the end was more exiting to watch..
Uh, did you watch it? The goalie made tons of saves and rarely allowed a goal. This is a bizarre complaint.
But then again, this whole thread is a bizarre complaint - I'm amazed, though with this place, I shouldn't be - that someone could find fault in the things Kovalev attempted, let alone call his efforts boring.
very honestly...Kovalev's moves were the best. Ovy was utter crap...like utter. I guess the fan voting and just the foregone conclusion that whatever he does is amazing was the reason he won. I know many people can do it, but Kane's use of the knob all the way to score was better than any of Ovechkin's moves. Getzlaf's was better too. Still how can you say Kovalev's multiple moves weren't at least tied for the best. Judge it on how hard it is to do.
TBH I thought he was one of the better ones, he came 2nd in voting. Ovech,Kovy, St.Louis I mean it takes skill to do what he did, and you have the guts to pull off soccer moves like that. It was creative and I am happy with the result.

Uh, the goalie was told not try to hard to make saves..
Btw, i'm not complaining, it's just that it could've been more exiting than what it was..
I just think he should've shown his deking abilities and then shoot all the pucks at net. Should've just deke between pucks as fast as he could and then shoot.
As far as the goalie is concerned....how about NO FREAKIN goalie next time? At the dunk competition, I don't see a guard ready to stop the ball from going in....don't put any goalie...

Kovy was the only guy who had a least a decent move for every attempt in the shootout, Getzlaf and St. Louis had one good move each but the rest of their attempts were terrible.

100% correct
St louis had that one amazing move, getzlaf had that one amazing move
but kovalev at least tried to pull something off everytime, im not trying to be a homer but come on, kovy put on a decent show, with the pressure of the entire universe on his ass, i applauded kovy right he was finished at home, and so did everyone else, landing a puck on top of ur head ...not....NOt an easy thing to do.. and then pullin a couple of moves? come on...i understand why ovechkin won but at the same time, he shouldnt of
if i had to pick the best move that was done by far, it was st louis', so creative, and so aamazing, but he didnt score lol..

Yeah, but it's possible to see a dunk without anyone being close to block. Much more frequent than someone trying a fancy move in front of an empty net, unless you're Patrick Stefan.
Thing is, it just doesn't translate well in hockey because the fancy moves are basically irrelevant to scoring. The shootout elimination was much more interesting IMO.
Was it just me or was anyone else not impressed with what Kovy did in the breakaway challenge? I mean I love Kovy, and maybe i was expecting too much and was let down, but I think he could have pulled some much cooler tricks. I've seen his hockey warrior videos and he did way cooler stuff there. Thoughts? Did I just expect to much from him or were you kind of surprised at his lack of "wow".
