2010 Preview?

Does everyone here think we saw a preview of Thornton's line in the 2010 Olympics? Marleau - Thornton - Iginla. I know it was just an All-Star game but their styles seemed to mesh very well.

I think it will be really hard for Marleau to break into the Olympics next year, there is just so much competition to crack the lineup. Although if he keeps up his current pace he'll be a great option.

I heard the announcers say that during the game, but as others have said, it would be tough for Patty to make it.

Its amazing, you get a team like Canada (and to a lesser extent Russia and Sweden) where they leave off very skilled players because they have such a selection, and then you get a team like Germany ... where Goc and Ehrhoff will probably both play.

Phil Gogulla should also get a spot on the German team. Damn Sabres stealing all our German prospects. We should invoke that old clause that gave teh Canadiens domain over prospects from Quebec and be able to exercise extra picks to get the Germans.

Is Austria and Switzerland going to be there? If so they'll both have one star player for the first time I can think of.

Thanks MT and Nem. The Germans might have a real team in the not too distant. They should be able to pull a decent first pairing out of Ehrhoff, Goc and Seidenberg and Hecht and Sturm are 2/3 of a decent top line.

Do you guys know if there are any Germans who will be reasonably high in the draft for 2009 (probably not first round)?

Edit: BTW, the Preds seem to be going after German dmen.

They have Sulzer and who else? I know they had Oliver Setzinger out of the DEL, but a) he's a forward, and b) he's Austrian (EDIT: my bad, Setzinger played in Finland, not Germany)

Germany perpetually seems to be on the brink of moving up into a regular, respectable slot at the bottom of the "big group" with the 6 hockey powers (Can, US, Swe, Fin, Rus, Cze) & Slovakia. Their problem is that they endlessly produce the same kinds of players: rounded, two-way players with Ok to good offensive capability, but not team-carrying offence. As a result they're forever forced to trap in order to stand a chance and players continue to be indoctrinated into that system and style of play. What Germany needs more than anything is a Thomas Vanek or an Anze Kopitar or Lars Eller. They need players with flair in order to score for the team now and inspire both a shift in style and future generations of scorers.

Dietrich?

I thought Sulzer was German born. He was playing DEL last year and this year is in Milwaukee.

whoops, my mistake. I meant to say that Setzinger never played in the DEL like I thought he did.

and I know I saw a discussion of 09 Germans, but now I can't locate it. Germany is always the one country i'm interested in studying as a whole for each draft. Partly because I can (it's not like learning about the 30-40 Swedes or Fins or Russians that might have serious draft consideration) and partly because i've always had a strong affinity for German hockey.

Going the other way: Marleau, Vlasic, Seto and a 3rd.

Yeah, I'd say that looks about right. That's probably along the lines of what it would take to get him too.

Could you imagine if Marleau - Thornton - Setoguchi becomes absolutely dominate and makes Team Canada next year as like their 3rd line. Far fetched but how awesome would that be.

No. Not good, not awesome at all.
A few Sharks fans would die of a heart attack. Is that what you want?
