Kane vs. Doan - Read

Hypothetical situation, you are the GM.

Your team is in 7th place in the conference at the trade deadline. By all accounts, you look like you will be making the playoffs, although the road is far from being secure.

You have the opportunity to pick up pending Free Agents Shane Doan or Patrick Kane (I know they aren't, but just say that they are). You know that based on your teams situation, this player is going to be a rental just for the stretch drive and the playoffs. The payment for both is equal.

Who do you choose? Kane or Doan?

Really close, Kane will score more points but Doan is a great leader. But I think I would sign Kane.

I'll take Doan for the Canucks. It is close, but Doan would be a lot better fit for the team and he is one of my favourite players.

Why not just ask who is a better player right now? If you think Patrick Kane is a better player there is no real reason to not vote for Kane. At least I don't see it. I'm just picking the player I think is better, Patrick Kane.

I'd want Doan. I just don't feel that Patrick Kane is that far ahead of Doan in terms of talent to be honest. Then again, he's still developing and will probably be better in the long term. But then long term is irrelevant since he's just going to be a rental.

I would take Doan pretty easily, taking leadership and other important factors into account.

Doan for the Leadership and Experience. At This point he is better than Kane. In the future, this is a whole different story.

Doan, we need size in our forward corps. Although bringing Kane home would certainly be popular and we could sell a bunch of jerseys off of it...

We need a rough power forward more than a playmaking wizard. We already have Whitney and Samsonov so we need someone who can take some punishment, dish some out and put the puck in the net. Kane's one of my favourite players in the league and if my team needs were different, I'd probably take him but the Canes need more a Doan type player.

Shane Doan. Same skill level, with leadership and grit.

As much as i love kane, the oilers don't need another small skilled winger. A big, twoway faceoff winning center would be great

Doan. I think he is a better player right now and he has that extra grit that is so valuable during the playoffs. Kane's got a bright future though

The answer should be Shane Doan.

However, for those of you saying they have the same talent level, remember, Kane scored 72 points last year and Doan scored 78 points. That was the first time Doan's scored more than 70 points in his entire career, while Kane did it his rookie season. I think it's safe to say Kane is the more talented player.

Isn't that why the answer should be Kane?

Doan's the type of player you really want for the playoffs. Not saying Kane isn't, but for the stretch/playoffs, it's Doan all the way.

Guys, they are both just shy of a PPG pace. Results are Results. Who cares what year it is in for a stretch run scenario?

If they both score the same, and the obvious experience/ toughness edge goes to Doan, then it is a no brainier.

Since when is Doan a faceoff winning center? 45% isn't very good.

He takes a lot of faceoffs deep in the zone when he plays with Jokinen, but still plays wing.

In the situation you listed I'd surely take Doan. If it where some freak situation where my Wings could grab one, I'd take Kane

I already said my answer was Doan to the original question, re-read my post. The point I was making was talent level. It took Doan 10 years in this league to score 70-something points and Kane came in and did it his first year as a teenager, that's a big difference and it matters when comparing future statistical output. It's unlikely Doan will ever hit 100 points in his career, but Kane has the talent to put up 100 points consistently in his career. Their point output may be even now, but Kane will likely surpass Doan's career totals halfway through his own career.
