Dawn of War II

So the pre-order/soulstorm beta has been out for about a week now...

And open beta starts tomorrow.

Anyone been following it/ thinking of picking it up?

It's pretty good. I think it'll definitely compete with Starcraft 2 for best RTS this year.

For those who haven't been following it:

DoW II has no base building or resource gathering. Instead you have one building that produces units in 3 tiers. The building can be upgraded twice obviously. Each tier has several units that might not necessarily be stronger, but gives a more strategic use.

The way you gather resources is by capturing power nodes which can be upgraded with defenses. Each power node gives you added power per second, which is used to produce units. These points can be used as defense , you can set up turrets and stuff there. Usually they are at key choke points so they are pretty much necessary to have. While that might seem like resource gathering, its really quite different.

The other thing thats different is there is a hero-unit system, kind of like in Warcraft III. Each hero has a bunch of abilities and squad effects that dictate what kind of game you'll play. There is also a gear system in place where you can equip items/armor to your hero which create added effects. More gear can be unlocked by your rating on the DoW II ladder.

It's really quite fun, although I'm still trying to figure out the best strategies and stuff. Its got a pretty steep learning curve. Unless you've played Company of Heroes, which is where Relic got most of their ideas for DoW II.

I think it'll be popular to those who are not hardcore into RTS games as it adds a lot of stuff that is new. Although, there is a surprisingly good amount of depth to it that it will popular to RTS veterans too.

Its nice to see there are game developers still trying to evolve genres and not sticking to the same old ****. (*cough*Blizzard*cough*)

I’m interested, I love RTS games …

Dark Reign, Age of Empires, Galactic Battlegrounds, Rise of nations, Lord of the rings and I did briefly try some of the Dawn of War series, I believe it was Dark crusade. I couldn’t get into Warcraft III because it had such a low unit limit, I like large scale assaults!

In college we would have huge LAN games with massive battles against multiple computer opponents. I remember Dark Reign had a 1000 unit limit, we would max everything out and some of the slower machines would just stop functioning altogether, ah good times!

I guess I’m a bit old school when it comes to these types of games but I do like the idea of having ‘hero’ type units and being able to equip units with different gear and so forth.

In the older games gathering resources got to be a bit repetitive as well, so I won’t miss that aspect.

few questions though:
Does the game have a single player mode or is it just for online users?

Is there an ‘instant action’ or ‘skirmish’ mode where you can select maps and play as different factions against computer opponents? LAN capable?

Is there going to be air units as well? I think Dawn of War only had land units.

How do you find the graphics engine?

Has a single player mode which Relic claims is pretty in depth for RTS. But PC Gamer put out a review saying mission variety wasn't that good. I haven't played single player so I don't know from experience.

Yeah skirmish exists. Pretty sure it will be LAN capable.

No air units at the moment. Dawn of War: Soulstorm (the last expansion) had air units so it's likely at some point they will get added.

Graphics engine is crazy. Destructible terrain is awesome. Runs very smooth.

Its definitely not a game like Starcraft or the old Dawn of War where mass producing units was possible and was pretty much what the game was about.

Now it's about using a few units efficiently.

Considering DoW has been the game I've logged _by far_ the most hours on over the past 4 years, you might say I'm interested. : )

I saw the video clips on their website, though, and I'm a bit leery that it'll run all that well on my P4 2.4 rig...

I'm a big fan of the W40K Dawn of war PC games. I got all of them: From DoW original to SoulStorm. I can't say I've been impressed on how THQ/Relic just abandoned supporting SS, being broken and needing desperate patching, to work on DoW 2. So I'm not sure.

I'll need to play a demo and it has to be phenomenal.

Eh... Doesn't surprise me that Relic didn't support SS with DoW 2 coming out shortly.

The game plays nothing like DoW though.

Fewer units per squad, fewer unit choices, no base building, hero units.

Its pretty much a different game all together. Calling it a sequel would be misleading.

Yaya, I know it's not a sequel. I'm just saying that SS was left broken for months!! Sometimes there was barely 150-200 players online at peak times for me.

But anyway I gotta play a demo before I consider buying.

Ya DoW was very similar to CoH. Never bought CoH though, only demos

It will be interesting how DoW2 gameplay turns out with so much difference...

i've tried to get into RTS games, I suck at them so bad. I don't think I've ever finished a SP campaign in any RTS game I've played. This game does look good, I know if I tried to play the MP beta I would get owned, so i'm not even gonna try. the graphics in this game do look sweet though.

that's cool. when I realized there was a loot system that really peaked my interest. I do have a TON of other games to keep me busy, but maybe I'll look into this is a couple of months. I did play the online beta and my one complaint was that a lot of the units moved slower then the 2nd coming of god.

I finally caved and bought this game despite no random Steam half-off weekend sale. I figured I'd like it more than CoH because it's less about hard counters and you got much more varied factions and I'm just really not feeling a WW2 game. Seems a little more action oriented and fun too. I entered the beta for the new patch on Steam and played some 3v3. I really had a lot of a fun. I don't exactly know what is the most efficient path yet, but I always found it a fairly tough choice deciding over upgrade or unity and when to tech up. I also enjoy that upgrades and units come out a lot faster than most other RTS games. The tactical nuances like retreating and the cover system, combined with heroes and their special abilities, upgrade paths, call-ins, variance between factions, and the overall strategy and teamwork needed to cap points makes this game far from shallow.

I'm still pretty noob, but if anybody wants to add me and play some matches maybe my Live account is Borat55 and my steam account is aswan4. Is there a database somewhere that lists the stats, armor and weapon-type for each unit?

I bought this game and played about two or three online matches. My friends are all way better than me. I always feel like the weak link playing w/ them.

I'll add you to my Steam friends list tonight.

I'll ignore the jab at blizzard as I am a huge fan :p

I play a decent amount of warcraft 3 still and might give this beta a try as I like the idea of the hero unit.

I was waiting on this to hit half price on steam for a while, so I jumped on it as soon as it did. Campaign mode is simple so far and from what I read the multiplayer is the real selling point for this game. Considering I am not a big fan of base building and resource management, I like the concept of multiplayer gameplay that focuses on combat and node capture. At 1080p and the highest settings the visuals are amazing; right up there with the best looking games on any platform. It doesn't even take that great a rig to play at these settings as my hardware is fairly dated. All in all, easily worth the $25.
