Gionta with another assist tonight.

Lol, don't care about Bernier.

New Jersey isn't going to move any major roster players to make a purchase at the deadline. Gionta has been producing well so far and it would disrupt Elias' production to move him. Any moves will involve role players, prospects, or picks.

Would something like Ohlund for Corrente + 2nd work?
Corrente will be immensely better. Be patient.

I was thinking the same thing. The Devils would be happy if Corrente turns out to be anywhere near Ohlund let alone "immensely better".

Do we really need defensive help?

We're in the top five for goals against. A top 2 defenceman would be welcome, but anything less than that - especially if it ruins our offensive chemistry (like say, dealing Gionta) - would be overkill.

You darn tootin right we need D help. It may be fine and dandy right now in the regular season but once the playoffs hit, eveything changes. Unless we upgrade on D (like getting rid of a pylon called Greene) were gonna get thumped and it'll be a one and done or at best a second round exit.

I agree about not trading Gionta, but we don't really have any assets to get a decent D-man in return, and Lou is not going to mortgage the future for a #2 D-man.

Hopefully Lou will work his magic and get a deal in the same vein as the Shanny deal.

Gionta (3rd on his team in points, tied 2nd in assists) is not getting traded this year. Why risk that chemistry with Elias? Eklund is a genius for getting paid to make up silly **** like this.

I'm pretty sure the collective agreement around the league is that Ohlund is a solid #2 defenceman... well, ask anyone save for those in our division.

Given the choice of one or the other I would take Bernier. Easily.
That's great. Then you can keep him. NJ will happily keep Gionta and the better chance at winning a Cup this year.

Something around Gionta for Ohlund. 2 impending UFA's. Vancouver gets a good RW for the Sedins, or a guy they can use with Sundin, and Devils get a very solid dman.

Bernier can't be dealt because of his offer sheet

I've watched every Canucks game this year and I haven't thought that once. The only thing he seems to be lacking is a little finish and some hockey sense, both of which could come with time.

I'm not sure how many Canucks games you've seen this year but I would be curious to know what you're basing your assertion on.

I'm not sure how a player can lead the team in hits and be considered lazy or motivated.

It's still an extremely unbalanced trade but I don't get how, a once highly regarded prospect, automatically becomes crap once he puts on a Canuck uniform.

If he was still on the Sharks he would probably be considered a great asset.

Bernier has grown up a bit and matured in the past year or so. Still gets a bit of a bad rap from some of his moments with the Sharks.

Remember the same (Gionta for Bernier) deal being posted on the Devils board a few years back...believe the posted said Gio for Bernier and a second or third. Opinion from Sharks fans was that they wouldn't him for Gionta trade straight up.

I wouldn't deal Bernier for Gionta straight up either...

Bernier is a young player... is a RFA after this year, and has a few years to go to UFA status, while he's still showing signs of improvement overall... and we've all seen the general development cycles for powerforwards that nearly always take longer to mature.

Gionta is a UFA after this year... even if you could trade Bernier (which you can't given the offer sheet), I wouldn't trade him for a rental player unless it's part of a pkg for a legitimate star, which Gionta isn't.

IMO Bernier (RFA) is worth >> Gionta (UFA).

I'm basing it off his reputation in San Jose and his (very limited) time in Buffalo. Nucks fans say he's turned over a new leaf, I'll take their word for it. Apparently he's found his niche in Vancouver, good for him. He just doesn't provide anything to the Devils that we don't already have.

Honest.
That makes zero sense, and I am far from a Devils fans. Lou would never make a garbage deal like that.

Salary cap issues might make a deal more attractive for either team?
