Pittsburgh defenseman Ryan Whitney's name is making the rounds. Pens GM Ray Shero may use Whitney to lure a top line forward for a late-season charge.

Armstong? I don't think so.

It doesn't surprise me that Whitney's name is mentioned. For the right deal....

Two disappointing bits of information if true, IMO. I wouldn't mind Colby back, he's had a pretty good goal-scoring touch this year, but at what cost is the question.

I like to think it'd be something minor, or perhaps able to dumb Eatons salary off on them as he just does not seem to be able to get back to who he was before the injury. Too bad we didnt have some scrap like Stone to toss at them.

why would you trade a big, good skating, puck moving defenseman at a bargain price? why does everyone want whitney gone?

colby would be nice for maybe a scrub or a low pick.

Not surprised by the Colby part at all, I'd love to have him back.

Whitney being shopped is a stunner for me. I think he could get a guy like Horton in return since Florida will need a fallback plan on D when they move J-Bo, but still, trading Whitney for a forward is filling 1 hole and creating another imo.

Agreed, about Whitney.

Colby's value has gone up since he left here. It'll take a decent asset to acquire him. He's got the A in Atlanta, too. (not that it means a lot, but clearly they like him there)

What hole would it create? Did you not see Letang's 2 goals tonight?

Because big, good skating, puck moving defensemen are in high demand. As such, they would fetch a high price.

Great point. I'm all for signing Army if he wants to come back at a discount just to be apart of our team... but I'm not wiling to offer much up. I love the guy.. but come on.

Bingo. If Armstrong was had for cheap, you could have a situation where you could roll a big time hitter on two of the top three lines.

People like seeing Cooke on the top line and he and Army aren't all that far apart production-wise. Or he and Dupuis for that matter.

You could roll something like:

Army/Cooke - Sid - Kennedy
Fedex - Malkin - Sykora
Cooke/Army - Staal - Satan
Bissionette- Jeffery/Minard/Thomas/-Goddard

It would have to depend on who was traded for him, though. I wouldn't give up much more than Dupuis for him, but it'd be nice to have the additional hitting I think. And he's starting to regain his hands, so it could have a moderate payout.

Whitney > Letang Offensively IMO because Whitney can hit the net with BOTH a wrist shot and a slap shot

Letang is better and more physical on D though.

I like Colby, but he wasn't the answer to our top-line wing spot last season and he wouldn't be now.

He is better, and possibly always will be. But when considering the overall balance of the team:

Letang+Horton>Whitney

I think that the speculation has more to do with locker room chemistry than anything on the ice. Armstrong is Crosby's Jan Hrdina.

Nor should he be.

The only way an Armstrong trade makes sense to me, I think, is if Dupuis is going to get moved and Kennedy is going to be promoted. But, man, a third line consisting of Cooke-Staal-Armstrong would be fun to watch.

Isn't Colby a UFA after this season? If so I'd rather wait on it.

Bring back Colby. That's all I can say about that one...

Whitney should be available, We can get something good for him due to his ability and nice contract. We have Sarge, Letang, and GoGo for next year...Whitney would probably be able to fetch more than both of the younger guys. I think Whitney as a centerpiece for Horton would make alot of sense as it is a trademark Shero deal (giving up less than what we assume we would have to in order to get a key player).

Most importantly, though, bring back Colby

I thought Steigy said that he asked Colby himself and he said he was unrestricted.

Here it is, folks...proof that NHLers actually do post on HFboards.

I heard Steigy say that "there is a lot of confusion whether Colby is going to be a RFA or a UFA at season's end. So I am asked him. And Colby doesn't even know. he said that 'it was complicated', and he himself wasn't sure."

Colby does have that level of grit we could use more of. I am not surprised that Atlanta soured on him as he is what he is and that role is not going to jump out and excite you. But he could fill a spot that we are lacking if the price was not high.
