That's not how it works. Whether he was sent down is irrelevant. For him to be sent down, he had to be waived and clear waivers. He was in fact waived and did clear waivers (no one claimed him). At that point we had 20 days to send him down.

That's what FLY is saying. Why did Minnesota not simply claim him off waivers?

Because the Wild get to move a contract by making a trade.

Right. I was just restating what (I think) FLY was asking.

!
At 26, Reitz is not waiver exempt, so I don't anticipate him going down.

and we continue to get more defensive. more conservative. more renney "system"

getting something back for fritsche is good, i guess. unless you figure this guy is just another fahey type player who wont play a lick in ny.

to me its a big yawn. we do need a defensive dman, just not one that cleared waivers that no one else wanted.

oh get off it. I'm sure you'd be thrilled with the quality of offensive defenseman you could get for Dan Fritsche.

I argued in the other thread that I thought waiving Fritsche opened the door for one of Potter or Sanguinetti to get the call up, hopefully to displace Kalinin but more likely to be there to push the existing group and to get practice time with the team. Someone, Singin' maybe (?), disagreed stating that both of those guys would be better off getting lots of playing time in Hartford. It looks like he was correct.

Reitz is here to play spot duty and hopefully to make the existing defenders accountable. I'm not sure if he is a defensive specialist or just a goon, but I would LOVE to see Kalinin on the bench in Boston.

Just did a little research on Reitz. Looks like he likes to drop the mitts from time to time. Although, he is probably better off leaving them on. 8 majors this year, only won 1 of them, which was against Moen. Here is the youtube...

He did throw a nice hit though before which sparked the brawl.

Hahaha. C'mon, ODC, I'm in the Renney should go camp, but you can hardly make trading our 14th forward for a 7th defenseman into anything other than what it is.

If that sort of thing exites you then so be it! I am just researching the player they just aquired.

Also just found out that Reitz and Dan Girardi were also teammates in the OHL with the Barrie Colts. Not sure though if they were a defensive pairing, but at one point they were at least teammates.

I would anticipate Reitz to be the 7th dman, with his small cap hit. Good move IMO, he looks like he has NHL experiance and is only -2 on the season, hopefully we are looking at a younger Jason Strudwick here.

Not necessarily. We traded a cheap forward who was struggling to make the lineup for an even cheaper defenseman who will struggle even more to make the lineup.

Does he wear a shield?

A tough, physical defenseman who wears a shield? hmm weird.

Reitz is the 7th d-man. Renney will put him in when we need a more physical presence. Can't let Potter ride the pine because he needs to play in Hartford. Nothing else to it.

Sure looks that way. Its nopt as though Fritsche was going to do anything here anyways, so its essentially something for nothing.

good lateral move.

traded 1 bench warmer for another. but at least we now have a defenseman up here in case of injuries.

The Rangers defense--like the rest of the team--is not very physical. Reitz may upgrade that a bit. For all his lack of coordination and mobility--he's still probably a better skater than Strudwick--although when it comes to dropping the gloves Jason is the better fighter.

Reitz was called up last spring for the Wild's playoff series against Colorado when Nick Schultz was hurt. In his first game, he was one of the Wild's better players. He plays a very simple game and is a servicable 6th/7th defenseman.

My prediction based on track record:

Reitz will throw the body and clear the front of the goal aggressively until Renney benches him for doing so. If he ever takes a penalty defending his own crease, Renney will send him to Hartford to learn the Rangers way of non-contact defense.
