Economics. Pay one contract instead of two.

They must have wanted to get rid of Reitz, not just waive him.

Right. Not the first time someone got waived, cleared, then traded. You not only get the player but the contract too, no matter how small.

They also waived Kolanos anyways, unclaimed, so I guess they didn't want more tweeners.

I hope Danny can get some time in Minnesota. I'd like to see him do well.

Probably a team with a worse record had a claim in for him that would have lined up before the Minny claim.

My guess exactly. The Wild doesn't want to keep Reitz, and New York doesn't want to keep Fritsche. Minnesota wants to pay just one player. So both sides are happy.

As a Wild fan, I like it. Reitz just was behind too many players on the depth chart.

Fritsche was never sent to the minors and cleared waivers. The Rangers must have known or had this deal in place when he was waived, or while he was on waivers. Whoever said Kolanos being waived and demoted was a precursor was right. And I understand it that the Rangers are a bit thin in depth defenseman (<5th), and would at least rather waive him and send him to the minors than Fritsche, and if Reitz was claimed, they wouldn't sweat it.

My question is...'is this the first domino?'... I'm sure you know who will make this out to be something more extravagant than it really is.

A little bit, yes. He'll thrown down the mitts on occasion as well, but he's not a total bruiser by any means.

I thought Reitz was a serviceable 6th defensemen, but Lemaire wasn't totally enamored with him. With 6 healthy defensemen ahead of him on the depth chart, Reitz wasn't seeing any playing time.

Kolanos being waived had no impact on the trade because the Wild had an open roster spot and Kolanos was a center.

The Wild wanted to bring up another prospect center to play and that was why Kolanos was waived. DR is probably showcasing some of these centers for trade.

They are likely bringing up another defensemen because Lemaire likes to have an extra defensemen available. He also has to teach them the system before throwing them into the fire.

It's a rarity these days, it seems, but I think this is a good deal for both teams.
