Nikulin called up from San Antonio

http://coyotes.nhl.com/team/app/?ser...ticleid=406978

Don't know how we all missed it - must have been the breathless excitement of Joel Perrault returning to the NHL that did it.

With Reino out 4-8 weeks with a separated shoulder and Mueller out indefinitely with a concussion it was inevitable that someone would get a chance from SA... but Nikulin?

I'm as surprised as you are. They must really not want him to bolt for Russia or something.

Seriously? MacLean or Kolarik weren't ahead of him?

Well, here's hoping to another Lindstrom-esque steal. Maybe he'll decide he has his head on straight now that he's in the NHL.

We know that Lisin and Bryz are buddies... maybe having another Russkie around will help Nikulin get his bobblehead tightened.

Could this mean that Perrault didn't clear waivers?

That's what I was thinking...trying to get an answer.

Update:

Insurance just in case Joel doesn't make it through....and to see where Nikulin's game is at.

It could just be a precautionary, since we won't know until noon tomorrow if Perrault cleared.

this time of the season....a player of his quality...TB or the panthers or heck anyone of about 15 teams could use him right now.

i wonder if they called up nikulin to keep him off of that big road trip that is almost the whole month of feb. hes the only russian on the team. thats got to be rough. lisin was in that situation and it was hard on him. but i think lisins english at the time was almost non existant. so that had to make it insanely hard. if they call him up he can hang with bryz and lisin...i read lisin spent christmas with bryz and his fam. so im sure he would help out N. and who knows maybe that little change in environment will be the spark he needs if he gets ice time.

Well, we do have two of our top 6 forwards out. Calling up Perrault and Nikulin indicates to me that Mueller could be out a while. Reinprecht we know is out 4 -6 weeks.

February is going to be tough.

I think if we called up Porter in addition to Perrault, that would offset Rhino and Mueller. I may be the only one that thinks that, but i think porter is a bit of a rhino protege and perrault's offense is comparable to muellers (at least at this stage of their careers with Perrault being older than mueller). Look at the impact JP has had on San Antonio this year - that's impact player right there.

BTW, did anyone see the hit on mueller?? Who got him?

Maybe this is another one of those GMDM under the radar steals. I have faith in DM.

Hopefully he does well. He was one of my favourites until Zubov just outworked him.

Perrault cleared re-entry waivers, so he will be sent back down.

As I recall, it was Scott Niedermayer, and according to those who were there (zyllyx?), it was at least a questionable hit--there seemed to be an elbow involved. Of course, if Special Nieds can screw over his team for half a season and still be given the C the following year, I'm not surprised that there was never any question that he'd get away with a shady hit, with or without a supposed league crackdown on head shots.

Actually the opposite. He cleared, so he'll be with the team.

He meant Nikulin is going back down now that JP cleared waivers

I don't think we're going to see Jones again this season unless it's an emergency callup.

He's on a one-way contract and signed through next season. He'd have to go through re-entry 50% waivers to be recalled.

I meant Nikulin will probably be sent down , not Perrault.
