Paul Martin vs. Ryan Whitney

I was having a discussion the other day with a friend (Pens fan) and he says the Devils don't have a #1 d-man of any sort and that Martin is nowhere close to Whitney.

Please take overall play and everything that comes with the job into consideration, not only points. We all know that Whitney has a great shot and is a good PP d-man. But all things considered...who is the better d-man?

Thanks.

It is close.

I would take Whitney on my team, because we need offensive defensemen.

Whitney has a higher potential, imo, so I'll take him. It is close though.

tough question.

Martin's defense is head and should above Whitney's. Whitney's Offense is head and should above Martin's

My person opinion is when it comes down to crunch time I'd rather have a Paul Martin --- But I think it might come down to a teams needs

Exactly, which is why I made the thread.

I know that Whitney is the better shooter and better PP QB. But Martin is a guy all coaches would trust in every situation and is miles ahead of Whitney defensively. Martin's skating is also a joy to watch, effortless.

Whitney is better offensively...but Martin is a lot better at everything else imo..

Martin is Better than Most D-Men Defensively. Just So Under-rated.

Exactly. Whitney's offense doesn't make up enough of a difference to make up for all the rest that Martin brings. So i have to go with Martin on being the better over-all player.

Love to have either or both on my team. They would be great playing together.

Comparing offensive d-men and defensive d-men doesn't make much sense.

I think Paul Martin is the player the Devils would want right now (maybe us too), but that Whitney is clearly the more valuable asset.

I like Whitney but Martin is a better defenseman. Not flashy, underrated, and solid as a rock. I feel very confident when he's on the ice.

Whitney clearly more valuable than Martin? Maybe strictly based off their contract values, but Martin is a legit #1 in the NHL, Whitney is not.

Martin because as defenseman Martin actually PLAYS defense but can also skate into the offensive zone with the puck. Whitney is amazing offensivly, not so much defensivly

Martin is a much better defensive player, so I would choose him over Whitney.

Of course you would.

Whitney might fall down and give up a 2 on 1 that could cost you the game.
