I will be interested to hear from Colorado fans about this deal-has Morris been struggling this year?

Avs fans must be scratching their head. Why do they need a prima donna checking line player when they just aquired Barnaby? All this while downgrading their defense, from going to a potential Norris candidate to a solid top 4 defensive rock?

Once again, Lacroix makes a questionable deal. He would have been better off trading Morris + prospect for Witt and Kolzig. At least that one would have solved a weakness.

Let the flow of "Why didn't [poster's GM] offer something like that to Lacroix" begin...

I like this deal for the Yotes. They have a solid young d-core there now.

The Avs dealt from a strength to secure depth. You can never have enough depth going into the playoffs.

And I wonder which prospect it is. The coyotes will be happy to have a solid upgrade on defense but I feel surprised to see Vaananen go. I can imagine that he improves fast playing alongside Foote and Blake.

Morris has 28 points in 69 games with a +4, and Gratton has 29 points in 68 games, with a -19.

Lacroix got hosed, then again, it's nothing to be sad about.

Gratton has been playing very well for the last month and the half. To have a awful +/- is no surprise when you are coming from a team who has barely won a game in 2004.

No. We already know Regier is an idiot.

Phoenix has a somewhat decent core but no goaltenders. They won't go far unless they get a goalie.Boucher and Bierk aren't the answer. But their core is...

Jeff Taffe
Derek Morris
Mike Comrie
Daymond Lankgow
Paul Mara
Shane Doan
Ladislav Nagy

Not bad

Very stupid deal from Pierre Lacroix.. A d who has the potential to put 50-60pts a years for a forward who is overrated in Gratton. BAD

Yeah, I should have included the caveat ", except fans of the Sabres, who understand that Regier would have also demanded Hejduk."

Really though, he did make a big move in grabbing Brad Brown for our stretch run/sell-off....

Congrats to the Avs for prying loose Ossi from the Coyotes. I sure hope Morris will stop being an eternal possible Norris project and become the real deal soon for the Yotes. Yotes management is clearly looking at making the Yotes a more dynamic team which I can't complain about.

Ossi now has Foote as his mentor

A good deal by Lacroix imo.

This trade will look good for the Avalanche until (A) Blake or Foote gets hurt and they discover Vaananen can't adequately replace them, and (B) Gratton fails to deliver as a checking center when the Avs need him to step it up.

IMO Colorado slipped a notch when talking about the favorites in the West with this deal.

I don't like it. While Morris hasn't been great this year he has a huge upside and was the kind of guy you want to build a defense around.

Trading for Gratton/Barnaby when Nikolishin makes his return. Wonder if that means Forsberg will come back this season?

I think PL will be making another deal today as he's got some depth forwards now he can move for a veteran back up goalie.

The deal itsself: I kinda like Ossi, but D-Mo is the best player in the deal for me. Gratton is not the kind of player we needed IMO, but anyway.

Look for Väänänen to tap his offensive potential in Denver...
Never seen Gratton play, have you? Gratton is useless.

I think part of the reason they got him is because of faceoffs. A bit like the reason they got Nikolishin. But it is obvious Gratton is not the offensive player some thought he might develop into.

This deal is actually good from both sides. The swap for Morris & Vaananan isn't as bad as some people keep making Morris for Gratton to be. The 'Lanche gets two helpers out of one loss. 'Yotes will have defenders like Tanabe, Morris, Mara, and Suchy going into next season, which isn't bad. Plus, they are still owed a prospect from Lacroix.

Plus, Gratton is Gratton. Finally, Gretzky & Barnett does something right.

From a Washington perspective...

Why Gratton and Ossi over a package of maybe Witt, Grier, and Kolzig? I assume GMGM was asking for too much...maybe Ballard and/or Boychuk....that would have left Colorado with nothing in terms of prospects. This way they get two players and not morgage the future in the process.

But still....Gratton?? Ugh. Good luck with that Avs.

Because maybe the Avs don't want Kolzig. That what has been said all the way, they trust Aebisher. So they want an experienced back up, not an expensive starter. Plus, never believe the medias speculating package, they are rarely true.

I'm glad the Avs picked him up before Lou had the chance.

That said, Gratton is depth anyway behind 2 very solid lines.
