2-2-09 Flames at Avs

Ahhh, ever since the Avs beat the Flames, things have been downright crappy.

"5-hole" in the net tonight ("Iron Glove" is still trying to figure out the Toronto debacle)

Blah blah blah. It's getting tiring....

If changed my mind about Budaj. I think with a little better team (confidence maybe? maybe just excuses?) he could be our goalie for good. lets hope?!

also. Were going to burn the Flames (see what i did thar?)

Good lord, I hope Budaj isn't the Avs goalie for good. Outside of one really good streak a couple of years ago...the guy is as inconsistent as inconsistent comes. One day he looks like a world beater, the next he gives up 4 softies, and singlehandedly takes the wind out of the sails.

Like I said, if he is in a back-up role, I am fine with the Boods, but no thanks on starting after this year

Not that Spector has any real inside information on the issue, but his opinion is:

Quote:
Andrew Raycroft and Peter Budaj have been inconsistent and while they're not solely to blame for the Avalanche's struggles they haven't improved the situation. As this season slips away it's doubtful management will make a big move this season but will probably make the pursuit of a quality starter their top priority this summer.

Only problem would be who and how much. I hoped we could have gotten Miller this offseason but Buffalo learned from their mistakes.

Well, there are choices. Here are the UFAs who are unsigned for next year, and who (IMO) are probably better than what we have right now:

Fernandez (33 years old)
Khabibulin (35)
Conklin (32)
Roloson (38)
Garon (30)
Backstrom (30)
Gerber (33)
Biron (30)
Niittymaki (28)
Legace (34)

There are a bunch of other possibilities via trade, but these guys could come without compensation.

I am now at the point where I am pissed if they win. It won't matter anymore.

Khabibulin and Backstrom seem the best out of the list there. Only problem is, Khabibulin is old and he's at a age [36 not 35 ] where he'd only be a short term 2 - 3 year deal and in that time probably decline in his performance. Backstrom would be my no. 1 choice as well, but only two problem come to mind. His stats are easily inflated by the Wild system so he won't be as great as people might expect him to be, still a better option than what we have, but will be slightly overpaid. The second problem is having Minny let him go or hope Backstrom tests the UFA waters.

I'd be fine with any of Khabby, Conklin or Fernandez as our number one, with Weiman in position to challenge.

Of course, Backstrom would be the best option. Is Minnesota ready to hand over the job to Harding?

I would love Backstrom and maybe Biron if the only negative was contract. I am totally against a trade for goaltending if it involves prospects but if we can improve without hurting the system it might make sense. If the player is reasonably young it makes even more sense.

Frank would be a great choice for next season. Hes at that age now where goalies mature and round out there games...I cant see the Flyers not trying to resign him though so that prolly wont happen....Backstrom scares me because of the Wild system its easy to hide his flaws.

If Backstrom hits the market, I would sign him at any cost. He is at the perfect age and has a good track record. We need a goalie like that.

Nittymaki and Conklin isnt too much different from Budaj. Its an upgrade but still mediocre goaltending which will probably have us missing the playoffs.

I am not looking forward to this game. Calgary will avenge us for the last meeting.

I might even add Craig Anderson to the list. He's been phenomenal in Florida, and perhaps could be had a bit cheaper than some of the other guys because he is not as big a name. Although I'd go really hard after Nik Backstrom this year. Reminds of a Mikka Kipprusoff in the way he plays.

You're both wrong. It started when Budaj was named starter and Raycroft was brought in as the #2.

This season is the first time that I am cheering for the opposing teams. Why barely miss/make the playoffs, get a bad pick, and do the same thing all over again next year? Plus I want Hedman on this team!

If I had the number 1 pick, I would pick Taveras as he could easily be the next big player in this league. I'm still not sold on Hedman, I was not impressed by his play in World Juniors. I think he could be great but there is still a grey area with him. Taveras there is no grey area, he is a sure thing. Plus he would be a better face for the franchise than Hedmen. Anyways this is a bit off topic.

So yeah I hope we continue to crap out so we get a great pick instead of an average one. I'm not rooting against us, but I'm not going to be too mad if we continue to lose. I think we lose tonight be cause Calgary is pretty good and we stink so I'm feeling 4-2 Flames.
