Crosby + Phaneuf vs Ovechkin + Green

You are starting an NHL expansion team. Without taking contracts into consideration, which two players do you take?

A physical forward who's also the best player in the league with an offensive defensive with a booming shoot. That's who i would take.

Last year, Phaneuf>Green

This year, Green>>Phaneuf.

Code:
GP +/-	Goals Pts	Pts/Gm Bshots Tkaways	TotShots ATOI

Green 38	+20 15g 40 1.05 60 26 176*	25:34**
Phaneuf	48	- 7 5g 31 0.64 53 15 248*	27:00

*Total Shots = Shots + Missed Shots

** Green left two games early with injury, which cut about 35 seconds off his average ice time.
Without these games, his ATOI is ~26:10.

How is Phaneuf -7 this year? With Calgary doing so well... I know most people discredit the +/- stat.. but really that is pretty bad.

Yeah, I'd take Ovechkin over Crosby by a hair and Green over Phaneuf by a hair. Very close, and it looks to be reflected in the poll.

Why would any of these guys be available in an expansion draft?

Being realistic, I'd take Hainsey and Dustin Penner.

Ovechkin and Green, Phaneuf is overrated in my eyes.

Because unlike other young defensemen in the league, Phaneuf is no longer being sheltered and he doesn't play "butter minutes" anymore. He's learning how to play actual defense and learning not to take himself out of position. Obviously, when you make that kind of adjustment, results won't be immediate.

Crosby for Ovechkin I'll just call a wash.

Phaneuf > Green. I don't care what the stats say this year. Phaneuf is bigger, stronger, more physical, has a harder shot. If I'm building a team, he's a rock, and I wouldn't pass him up for Green. Dion has also never had a noteworthy injury in his NHL career.

As much as I like Ovechkin over Crosby, I'll take Phaneuf over Green any day.

It's fairly difficult to measure defensive play with stats. Though yes, Green is having himself quite the season offensively.

We can watch Phaneuf for about 2 minutes to see how lacking he is in his own end.

Ovechkin>Crosby
Green>>>>>>Phaneuf

No brainer IMO.
