Kind of a weird place. Baby boomers are retiring but the economy is **** so companies are worried about hiring too many. Should be gold though when the recession is over.

The question is WHEN...this ****storm may last some time.
It took me several months after I graduated last May to land a job (one out-of-state in September), and I thought that was horrible, but I just got an e-mail from a woman I worked on a couple research projects with at uni, and she graduated the same time I did, and she still is unable to land a full-time position.
Another part of the problem for me, was that there were hardly any positions in my field back home.
It's bad out there, and I'm so happy that I am working, and I totally understand the frustration of employers looking at your resume, and then asking stupid questions, like why are there long gaps, even though you're obviously looking for a job, especially in this recession.
The worst thing, is that I think it will get worse before it gets better, especially with the shrinking US manufacturing sector. I'm a big believer that your economy has to produce a lot of goods, in order to be successful, but I have the feeling that the US gov't doesn't care about manufacturing.

Even in jobs that are known as being "recession proof", it is still really tough out there. Accounting/Auditing is never really hit as bad but lots of people were laid off in the public firms, and not many are hiring at all. It took me close to 7 months to find a new Audit position.
I think the "employment gap" question is pretty useless at this point in time. It really is quite obvious.
Then again, for this thing to fix, chances are every market has to crash before it gets better. Job, house and stock, and seems like all are pretty close to that.
Currently unemployed myself, although it's mainly due to being 'busted'. The company in which I work for though, layed off their longest serving employee two weeks ago.
I just graduated from my University in December. I have yet to even land an interview so I'm living at home and may start working at working at the grocery store I worked at in high school.
College student here, though very very lucky for generous parents. I really wish I had a job though, I feel like such a chump when by parents give me money.
You guys count "unpaid job" as jobless? Yeah, I work; but it's only during summers for the local race track. I write stuff for a few different people (read as: two). They don't pay unless I get a sponsor. And sponsor I have not.
Other than that, there really isn't anything nearby that I could just go and apply at. Window job hunting kind of sucks something awful.
I got laid off in september, but our Union hooked us up with schooling so i started my very first semester in college in january. And as a 27 yr old i feel ancient in these classes filled with 18-20 yr olds
Graduated 13 months ago (only took 7 semesters). I'm trilingual and have a BA in international relations with a background in economics and Asian studies. Looking to go to law school, but I need a company to help out with tuition assistance fist.
I've sent out hundreds of resumes. To date, one interview for a job that I was better off not taking.
For job searches, a good way to get interviews is to research companies you are interested in. That includes finding the right person to contact by phone and getting around the gatekeeper (or receptionist) and do your 30 second commerical.
This gives you an up for jobs that are not yet advertised. Once a job is advertised, you are then up against hundreds.
If you live in the GTA of Toronto and have had EI benefits in the last 3 years, do a search for "Job Shop" in google. This a gov't funded programme that speciales in cold contacts.
I still have a job but my hours got cut for next week's schedule.

I didn't have a job from early January until last week. It ****ing sucked donkey nuts but then i got hired at Boston Pizza. I swore i would never go back to kitchens, but hey what can you do.
I've applied everywhere possible, including: Adventureland(Long Island Amusement park), nearly every supermarket in my town, AMF Bolwing Lanes, countless other places as well. I've even applied to McDonalds.
Thank God I am only a student right now, but I'd like some cash to spend
I'm not unemployed, but rather under-employed. Real work is hard to find for a new grad with no experience, so I guess I just need to get used to bit-parts. Sigh.
