I just managed to get a job that'll start a month after graduation. Best of luck to everyone. Keep on plugging and try to let any contacts you know know that you're looking -- sometimes they'll let people they know.
And as always, apply at places you like even if they don't advertise.

I got laid off in August and still can't find anything. Since newspapers are dying my journalism degree is worthless. Been trying to land a government job, but that isn't going too well.

This. Although I'm not really in health care myself, but a closely related field (clinical toxicology).

knowing someone on the inside will really help you land a job.its not just about being qualified.that will only get you an interview or 2.my character reference sealed the deal.she already works for the company i now work at.let all your peeps know you are looking for work.it will suprise you how many of them can help you out.even if they're just a casual friend.

Military is where it's at if you want a government job. Joined the Marine Corps at 21, and I'm now getting paid to go to one of the best language institutes in the world. Two plus years of my five year contract will be done by the time I hit the fleet. Three years of being an Asian-Pacific cryptologic linguist and I'll be able to get a job with any three letter government agency that I want.

Much better long term plan than most people on here have.

USA unemployment rate now 8.5% says government but in reality Bloomberg news says it's at 15.5% when you include those that have given up looking as they're too discouraged and part time workers who can't find full time work.

What's the rate in Canada?

I feel like I've been screwing up one thing after another since I started this job in spring '07. We're on one-year contracts that get renewed each summer. I have a bad feeling this time around. I wish they would just get it over with now.

I will not return to the kitchen. I will not return to the kitchen. I will not return to the kitchen. I will not return to the kitchen.

Seriously though, the two jobs I've held both had bosses that were, for a better word, stupid. Stupid as in their opinions are worthless, in my opinion, and for that reason I did not communicate to them about being references for me. Therefore, I pretty much have no references and unless I can find a univ prof or something to back me one of these days I'll be in a bit of trouble when I graduate next spring and compete for jobs with all those "COOP" students. I'm hoping the economy has picked up a bit by then and hopefully I can snipe a career somehow.

A summer job would be nice but I'll need something in which I can take a little vacation time off, and I will not return to the kitchen. I want an office job, so I can browse HF

As an update, I got a job working at a government (Army) R&D base! Awesome job, basically CSI-like.

Still, I interviewed in early March and still haven't started....damn security check and slowness of government.

I've moved to Central Jersey for it though, which is fine. I'm right by Rutgers, where I graduated from, so I'm kinda back home!

Never even realized this thread got stickied.

Best advice anyone could give. Monster and Career Builder are good for finding companies and possibly getting an interview, but you're network of friends and fellow employees you work with are the best chance of finding jobs. I've never done it, but I'm sure it's nice to tell a boss you hated to F off. I've never done it because I don't want to burn bridges, because times like now would be a good time to get some help from them.

I posted on my facebook that I lost my job and within 24 hours, 5 people got a hold of me that they'd "look out for me." Then 2 days later another friend got a hold of me which got me the job offer I just accepted. Anyone looking for jobs, especially now where jobs aren't plentiful, get a hold of people you know to see if they can help you out. Even if it's out of the blue and haven't talked to them in a while, it's still worth the chance.

Hehe thanks. Well I did the interview last week and it went well. It lasted about 1 hour though. A ton of questions being asked including the ones I asked as well

Good luck to everyone still looking.

if you have a BA, you can find work in Korea. Not shabby pay, either, assuming you speak English.

Things are tough all over. I thought my job as a park ranger from last year was safe for this year but it looks like that isn't the case.
