Both in my opinion... Someone will take a chance on him this summer if we let him walk... kind of like Fedotenko.

I agree. He puts in a good effort and seems to be a good guy, but the talent isnt shining through. You cant keep a guy on your team just because he's trying.

As for Jussi Jokinen, he has not been sent to AHL Norfolk and he did not practice on Friday. What does that mean? Perhaps that Tampa Bay is working on a trade.

Brian Lawton just impressed me...

Brookbank, Melichar and a 4th for Jokinen.

I thought we could get a seventh rounder at best, even if the players are crap a fourth rounder never hurts.

Well Melichar is in the AHL and Brookbank while he seems like a decent enforcer and I am impressed with some of his youtube videos is basically a dime a dozen but still, I expected Jokinen to rot in Norfolk, collect 100% of his salary and go to Europe in the offseason. To get anything should be celebrated. For as much flak Lawton gets on this board he deserves a round of applause here.

EDIT, I just remembered that Melichar broke St.Louis' leg in 2002 with a cheapshot board. I wonder if they remember.

As a Pens fan who had to suffer through Melichar, hope he isnt recalled from the AHL, he will make your defense worse. And if he is recalled, well, enjoy the "oh no, not again!" face...

We needed defensive depth on all levels, so this is a start. Even if they're just 2 good AHL defenders, I'll take it.

The cool thing, for me, about Brookbank, is that he played for the Solar Bears back in 2001 and won the cup with them.

You know what?

I just simply cannot WAIT for all the ZOMG!!11 Tampa traded Jokinen for crap!!!111 posts

I think Lawton made a good move here, strangely enough nobody can be as terrible as Malik so if Melichar replaces him in the lineup at some point I'll be happy! Brookbank is a tough customer we can send to the AHL if we need to...and we get a draft pick, which is the most important thing really.

Good work Lawton...I like it.

Not so much bashing but I am shocked by the people who still consider Jokinen to be automatic in the shootout. Do they not realize he has been dreadful the past couple years and that his reputation in the shootout all comes from a hot start in 2005?

haha I don't even wanna think about it. That would be awful. Hopefully the Rangers pick him up. they're desperate enough to do it.

Good job by Lawton here... I didn't think he would get anything for Jokinen... To get two player and a draft pick... I would say I'm impressed..

Sounds like Carolina wanted to dump salary as they could have had him for nothing. The 2 guys we got sound like clones of Koci and we only need one of him. Like the draft pick tho'.

"To even get something that could potentially be useful to this roster in return for those two is an absolute steal in itself for us. He really hasn't been productive at all this year but in his first two seasons he had over 40 points".

"This is probably Jokinen's last resort to stay in NHL. If he is as bad as in Tampa he will find himself in Europe next season"

Melichar is a Malik clone.

I do agree with the post though, I would not be surprised at all if all 3 players are with different teams next year including Jokinen in the KHL.

I don't agree with your assessment of Melichar. Sure, both under utilize their size, but Malik doesn't have nearly the same mobility. It's mostly that and the bad decisions with the puck that's made him a liability, at times.

Jussi has a brother with Karpat in SM-Liiga, so don't be surprised to see him go home to play with him.

The question that hasn't be asked since camp is: who exactly is on this team? In essence, when the defensive corps gets to full health, who will dress?

Ranger, Eminger, Meszaros are on for sure. Murphy and Krajicek might be seen as sort of on the bubble.

Then we've got for that last spot: Melichar, Heward, Malik, Brookbank, and maybe Smaby.

You are right, I wasn't talking about play style, I meant more of neither Melichar or Malik should be trusted with anything more than a 7th defense spot.

Melichar actually has good mobility for someone with his size.

Melichar makes Malik look like Lidstrom.

Melichar doesn't utilize his size, because his shoulder injuries have made his physical game pretty much non-existant. What do you get when you have a physical defenseman and then take away his hitting? Joe Melichar. Until you watch him on your team, you won't have an idea of how awful he truly is.

Pray for Malik.

You haven't seen Malik play this year then.

Either way it doesn't matter, Melichar is going to Norfolk.
