RUMOUR: Sens hot after Kolzig

SportsNet TV had Bruce Garrioch reporting that the Sens were after Kolzig. This was also reported on TEAM1040 in Vancouver.

The Caps do not need additional goalies. Karel Rachunkek would be an attractive starting point, though, and I imagine they might add Witt to a package.

I'll be playing starting center for the Caps next season before a player making $3.5M.

Kolzig makes over $6 mil per for the next two seasons. If Washington wants to trade him, they'll either have to take on some salary, or pick up some salary. Simple as that.

If Kolzig does go to Ottawa and they still lose in the Playoffs, I wonder if there's a penalty box big enough to hide Kolzig from the Senators fans?

It wouldn't be as bad as the time we lost Tugnutt for Barasso and his "playoff experience".

It'd be like acquiring Ron Francis in the hope of leading your inept team to the promised land.

Oh wait.

EJ Hradek answered his cell phone live on ESPN News and said that Colorado, Ottawa and Vancouver are all hot after Kolzig, and that McPhee MUST get rid of his contract.

The Avs just got Salo to back up Abby I don't see them being interested anymore.

Ottawa, Yeah I see them Interested, Vancouver as well despite Burke staying behind Cloutier, and Muckler not trying to look like the Public sways his hand.

I wonder if the Sens picked up Kolzig or Witt. The deadline has been passed, right?

There's usually a delay while league offices sort out the mess.

There's no way that McPhee didn't move at least Witt before 3 pm. We'll have to wait and see.

Yeah, I figured trades will continue to come in throughout the afternoon.

FWIW, on the Caps' internet radio show "Caps Report", Mike Vogel said he had talked to a member of the Caps' staff and the staff member told him that it was "95% certain that we're (the Caps) are done."

Looks like Witt and Kolzig might still be Caps.

See: Capitals Trade Grier, Retain Kolzig and Witt
The reason why Kolzig wasn't moved:
Quote:
The Capitals attempted to trade Kolzig up until yesterday's 3 p.m. trade deadline, according to numerous NHL sources who were involved in the talks, but a deal fell through when Ottawa, Colorado, Philadelphia and Vancouver were unwilling to pick up all of Kolzig's contract. Negotiations with upwards of 10 teams about Witt failed to unearth a strong enough defensive prospect to complete a trade.
So nobody wanted to pick up the $12.75M on the remaining two years, "With the uncertainty of the NHL's new collective bargaining agreement". Not surprising. Actually the Caps are best able to carry this contract, with little expense left to pay for except for some lease payments on Jagr.

Why Witt wasn't moved:
Quote:
Negotiations with upwards of 10 teams about Witt failed to unearth a strong enough defensive prospect to complete a trade.
So they wanted a D back, and nobody was prepared to offer Witt jr. or Gonchar jr. back. Either the Caps didn't like Rachunek enough, or the Sens like De Vries plainly better, or the Sens liked De Vries + cash + De Vries signed for 3 more years better.

Edit: late night typo fix

From what the articles and the media press conference with McPhee indicated today, he met with Leonsis as the day began and they agreed that the team was at an acceptable payroll level.

Would they have liked to trade Kolzig and his salary? Sure, but they did not have to accept just any deal that crossed their path. Considering all that Kolzig brings to the table, they wanted a big return and were surely not about to pick up salary. Interest was evidently there from multiple teams, but no one was offering anything deemed to be substantial. Since the Caps did not have urgent payroll constraints requiring them to deal Kolzig, they elected to retain him. That is what Kolzig has wanted all along anyway.

The same thought process seems to have been at work where Witt was concerned. I suspect they would have taken a Rachunek deal, but that Ottawa judged de Vries to be a better prize than Witt (with which I would agree) and there were no other teams offering NHL-ready defensemen in a Witt offer. The Caps had two NHL defensemen this year, had recently traded one for a very talented but still young Shaone Morrissonn, and felt they needed to retain Witt unless bowled over by an offer. The Klepis for Grier offer was the sort of deal they could not pass up, so in that case they traded one of their vets who was great in the room. For Witt, however, no one blew their socks off. He means more to the Caps than whatever teams were offering.

How comfortable are the Caps on salary? Brendan Witt, who makes $1.75 million, is the second highest paid player on the team after Kolzig. The Capitals can certainly afford Kolzig. While they won't be competitive next season by any stretch, their group of kids is very impressive and most of the 2005-06 NHL team will be able to play together at the AHL level in 2004-05. As rebuilds go, it seems to be progressing well. I may hibernate for two years, but I am sanguine about the future.
