Again, the argument against Malkin even if Pens get 6th seed will be Ovechkin will most likely have WAY more goals.

And his team still higher, imagine this scenario:

Capitals finish 2nd in East

Penguins finish 6th in East

Malkin= 32 Goals and 118 Points

Ovechkin= 61 Goals and 109 Points

Who wins it? I would assume Ovechkin all things considered, especially if Crosby still finishes 2nd or 3rd in league scoring, the argument will be against Malkin as THE player of his team.

Think about that.

Ovechkin is the standout on his team, Malkin, although arguably the best, is not the standout.

This is Ovechkin's award to lose right now.

Last I checked, the Richard trophy was for goals, not the Hart. Malkin may be hurt by Crosby a little, but the rapid development of Green, Backstrom and Semin isn't going to work in OV's favor either. I know the awards voters love stats, but no stats can measure what Malkin has done for his team even on the nights they lose. Sometimes it looks like he's the only one trying.

Put another way: if the Pens make the playoffs, I, as a Caps fan, will have no problems with Malkin winning the Hart.

We're supposed to take you seriously when neither Malkin nor Crosby is on here? Sure, they might not be the current favorite, but you should automatically include the top 3 in points. Just silly.

Of course it is possible (maybe even likely) that Crosby hurts his chances.
If Boston finishes with the #1 record in the league and Thomas goes 40-8-6 still leading the league in sv% and Top 3 in GAA.

He will get more votes than Malkin on a non-playoff team, even IF Malkin makes the playoffs.

Remember Theodore for the Canadiens over Iginla??? Do ya?

If Penguins were 8th in East right now, I would.

But they ain't.

No non-playoff players, and this poll is for now, there will probably be a new one in a month.

Ohhhhh....I misunderstood.

This poll is still retarded without Malkin in there.

If the season ended today, Malkin would have 0 chance of winning.

Absolute 0, sorry.

Even if there were 10 games left in the season, as in, games left this months for most teams is 10 or less right?

Penguins would most likely not make playoffs and Malkin would have zero chance.

If they do, Malkin has a fair chance, but Ovechkin would still be the frontrunner.

My point is, this poll is for current times and Malkin and Crosby are not frontrunners or even Top 3, sorry.

Team records have to be considered.

I did not include Crosby nor Malkin.

Penguins are 10th in East, and that team is loaded.

The fact Crosby and Malkin play on the same team reduces both.

Sorry.
seriously?

I get your point...but it's still retarded. You just wanted to be the cool guy that started this poll so he could neglect the two leading scorers in the NHL.

With how much Malkin is leading in the scoring right now (if the season ended today), he'd still receive votes for the Hart even if the Pens didn't make the playoffs. So why not at least give me that option? If you're right and people consider team's records then people won't vote for him and you'll at least have an accurate poll. But don't give me like 5 choices and ignore two of the better options...that's just steering people into agreeing with you.

You picked a username to get a rise out of people and you made this poll for the same reason. We get it...you're opinionated.

Malkin will win this. When he puts up ~130 points, it'll be hard to keep him out of it.

Apparently the OP only cares about goals.

Washington is much more "loaded" than the Pens.

This poll is an epic failure.

I'm sorry I don't see either with a good chance at the Hart.

Especially seeing the other candidates and what they're doing.
our team is 10th because those two are the only ones scoring

If the standings remain the same, these are my picks:

Ovechkin
Malkin
Chara

I don't think Chara will be nominated, but I think he should be.

the hart hasn't been awarded as most valuable to his team in a long time.

if having any value depends on making the playoffs, and the hart is for most valuable to the team instead of for best player, then the hart should usually go to a player who gets a weak team into the playoffs.

several players whose teams have missed the playoffs have won the hart in the past.

As far as I can tell this hasn't happened since Lemieux won the Hart in 1988 and the Penguins finished last in the Patrick division. Since then the Hart winner's team has made the playoffs every year. Malkin might be nominated, but I don't think he'll win if the Pens don't make the playoffs.

The only other similar season to this one that I can think of is 2002. Iginla is very likely the best player in the league that year, but without Theodore, Montreal doesn't even come close to making the playoffs and thus Iginla is nominated for the Hart, but doesn't win.

It's a two-horse race between Ovechkin and Malkin. If the Penguins make the playoffs and Malkin finishes 8-10 points or more ahead of Ovechkin, he wins. If neither of those things happen, Ovechkin wins for sure. If the Penguins make the playoffs as a low seed but Ovechkin is within 7-8 points of Malkin and the Capitals are in the top 2-3, it's a toss-up.

This is kind of random of list, and as much as I hate to say it. Iginla will probably be in the conversation, Savard as well.

I kind of understand what OP is saying, although I don't necessarily agree with it. It's hard to say a player is most valuable to his team when said team has another Hart trophy winner and +100 point player on the roster (and is also captain).

Personally I think Malkin is much better than Crosby, but how valuable is he really when he has another top 5 player on the same team?
