You gotta wonder what the heck is going on in Tampa.

I think this was expected. They took two contracts from Carolina for the draft pick and wanted to rid themselves of Jokinen.

This is like the most logical move we've seen from them this season.

Would the canes want Brookbank back?

What I meant was that the reloving door is getting ridiculous. Obvously neither Melichar and Brookbank were going to lead the Lightning to the Cup...just their roster instability is becoming a joke.

Agreed. This move makes perfect sense. The Bolts have Koci on the roster and Melichar is probably worse than any defenseman Tampa have on the active roster. They just wanted the draft pick to was their hands of the whole Jokinen mess.

Of course, this was expected but still, you gotta wonder how cash strapped Tampa is. Correct me if I have the wrong numbers but the combined salaries of Brookbank and Melichar is about 1.5M$ versus 1.8M$ for Jokinen. All three contracts expire at the end of the season so the money saved by Tampa is 300K$ over 29 remaining games so 90K$. And if both are picked up only on re-entry waivers the cash saved is 45K$ versus waiving Jokinen. Or am I missing something?

This doesn't have anything to do with being cash strapped. If Montreal or Toronto can get out of paying $1.5 million they would do it too. This is being smart.

The question is: Is Jussi Jokinen that bad? The times I've watched him, I thought he was just fine.

The reason I ask is, Tampa Bay just couldn't wait to rid themselves of him.

How are you gonna get out of paying them? No one's picking up rubbish on waivers - teams won't even pick up decent players on waivers.

Hope for the best, if they both clear send them down for Norfolk's playoff push.

He was this year. 31 game and counting goalless streak, no defense, no hitting, not scoring in the shootout. He was gone anyway, there was zero chance he was going to get a contract from the Lightning as an RFA.

... uh, yeah.

These two were nothing more than cap clearing so Carolina could take Jokinens contract in the deal, and the pick was more or less to pay for it and somehow you don't get it?

They're not cash strapped. Why have two goons? Why have one, really? Malone has no problems with most fights.

Nope, just doesn't fit anymore. Soft, smallish wingers in a physical system like Tampa is employing just isn't working for him. Thats why he looked good last year, but not this year. Good luck to him, I bet he fits in Carolina nicely.

I hear Melichar really stinks but I do remember people saying that he played with Rozsival

could be an outside chance the Rangers say well he is cheaper than freaking Kalinin

then just waive Kalinin who is going to clear anyways and can be depth in the playoffs

just a thought

To all those who are questioning this move, I have to ask: What exactly did you expect was going to happen? Did you not see this coming? Did you really think that Melichar and Brookbank were going to see game action with Tampa???

I'm surprised it took this long.

Accoring to lightning beat writers, Melichar might only for the simple fact that we have four defensemen and Koci is good at blocking shots only because he can't get up off the ice, because he can't skate.

At this point, Tampa could waive someone like Marek Malik or David Koci and people here would lose their mind.
